Best Way to Get Rid of Fleas - Discover a Simple Two Pronged Flea Busting Method

Author: C I Anderson

The best way to get rid of fleas be it from your home or pets is as quickly and efficiently as possible, which is really easy to do with the right help and guidance but, very difficult to do if not tackled properly. It really is not enough to just kill the odd visible adult that you find or, worse still ignore them totally because you will very quickly find yourself with an infestation on your hands.

Ignoring any problem whatever it may be is not the most sensible thing but, I can totally understand why. Admitting to having to deal with and find the best way to get rid of fleas does not sit comfortably with anybody and let us be honest is not something that you are likely to want to broadcast.

It is purely a psychological thing because having to sort out these horrible pests makes you feel unclean but, it is not about being dirty at all (in fact it is a well known fact that they do not mind how clean and tidy you are either). The problem lies in a totally different direction and it has everything to do with fleas and their food.

The bottom line here is that these nasty little parasites need blood to feed on in order that they can reproduce and the adult female can lay her eggs. So, the prime source of this type of meal is 1.Humans 2. Cats 3. Dogs 4. Rabbits 5. Chickens 6. Any other warm blooded vertebrate you can think of.

As you can see it is going to be pretty difficult to avoid them, especially if you are an animal lover or pet owner. Even if you do not have a feline or canine pal it only takes a visit outside to put out your laundry or maybe dig your shrub borders and you can unwittingly become the taxi that takes them indoors once they have jumped on board.

When they have had their fill of blood, the female will go about her business of laying between 45 to 50 eggs per day. So, if you see your pet having a good old scratch or you see the red, raised itchy bites on yourself, then you can be pretty certain that you are now hosting a completely unseen lifecycle in your home (until of course they hatch and create total havoc in which case you will become very aware).

In order to get them gone for good you have to adopt a very hard hitting two pronged plan of attack   whereby you 1. Kill the adults 2. Prevent the eggs and larva from developing any further. By using a flea trap you can see instant visible results which is great for putting your mind at rest and takes care of adults very quickly and efficiently.

But, to really put the final nail in the coffin the best way to get rid of fleas is to use a combination of powders or drops and collars on your furry friends and treat your home with thorough vacuuming and powders too and there are plenty of eco friendly products to choose from to help you to do this. Before you know it these hopping hordes will soon be a very distant memory for sure.

There is an impressive Get Rid of Fleas website that explains and demonstrates the many benefits gained by using the latest flea busting tactics and techniques, as well as a complete collection of newest products for killing fleas for good. Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
How can I get rid of my cat's fleas?
My cat has a lot of fleas, so I took him to the vet and I used what they gave me, the fleas went a way for a few months but then came back as strong as it started. How can I get rid of the fleas?

    • ANSWER:

  2. QUESTION:
What is the best remedy to rid fleas?
What is the best remedy to rid fleas on a kitten that is 6 weeks of age?

    • ANSWER:
      original blue dawn works best:)

  3. QUESTION:
How can I rid fleas of my home?
My animals are infested in fleas! I have tried frontline, advantage etc and nothing seems to work. My home is infested the yard is a sandlot so they are coming in on peoples feet/animals when they go out to potty. I don't want to use a chemical bomb because I have a 6 week old baby in the home. Please help!

    • ANSWER:
      1. Vacuume your home well including cushions, down the sides and back of your furniture, pet bedding areas, any where your pets like to lay, and doorway areas. If they get on the beds vacuume the mattress and box springs, especially near edges and corners where "stuff" seems to collect, and under the bed too. Wash your bedding and pillows-hot water.
      2. Treat your yard with something specifically for fleas. Hardware stores sell it. It has nematodes in it that will kill the fleas and their larva.
      3. Treat your animals (I use Advantage). Read the package to see how close you retreat. You don't want to make your pets sick.
      4. Wait a day after treating to give a bath (again check the package instructions on the Advantage). Give bath with shampoo that kills fleas. I don't like using too much insecticide on my dog and she has sensitive skin so I take the shampoo I use and add about 10 drops of Texas Cedarwood essential oil to the whole bottle. You can get it at the health food store and it does cost a bit but will last you a very long time.
      5. While bathing pets also be washing their bedding-hot water and detergent and bleach. Do this every time you bathe the pets.
      6. Bathe your pets once a week until you get the flea problem under control.
      7. Don't forget to continue to treat the yard as proscribed on the package. Be sure to treat the area around the house well, especially the door for about 1-2 feet out.
      8. Keep pets out of the child's room untill the fleas are nolonger a problem. They will bite your child.
      Best of luck

  4. QUESTION:
Safest way to get rid of fleas in a house with a 3 year old in the house?
I need the safest, fastest way to get rid fleas in a house
I'm guessing we brought the fleas in when we were outside playing with the dog and my daughter picked up a stray kitten. I've treated our dog and there are no animals in the house, just trying to get the darn things out

    • ANSWER:
Flea bombs are not safe for you, your daughter or your dog. Treat the dog with a safe topical flea treatment like Frontline, Advantix or Advantage. Hartz, Seargents, Bio Spot etc, do not work and can be toxic. By treating the dog, you are treating your house as well. Just wash all bedding, vacuum frequently and get some Borax (the old school remedy powdered detergent) sprinkle it on the carpets, around the baseboards etc and then vacuum it up. Fleas need a host, which would be the dog, so if the dog is treated with a safe, high quality flea treatment, they will eventually jump on the dog and soon die.

  5. QUESTION:
How to rid fleas out of an empty house?
I had animals in my house up until 2 weeks ago. I had no flea problems until they left. We have moved everything out of the house and have bombed the house 3 times to rid these pest and nothing any suggestions?

    • ANSWER:
The eggs were left behind. The eggs hatching could be the problem. The sprays do not kill them. Changing the kind of bomb and spraying again should get all of the hatching eggs.

Toilet Training Your Cat

By C Swarens

Are you tired of cleaning out your pet cat's litter box? If so, you might want to try training your cat to use the toilet. It may sound crazy, but it really is possible to teach some cats to use the toilet for their bathroom needs rather than using the litter box. Not only does this help you avoid having to clean litter boxes, it also helps you avoid getting that litter box smell in your home.

Getting Yourself Trained

When training your cat to use the litter box, it is important to remember that it is a step-by-step process that will take some time to complete. In addition, some cats are easier to train than others. Therefore, if you have multiple cats, it may take you longer to train one cat than it does to train another. You will also need to train yourself to make certain you create the best possible situation for your cat to use the toilet. Namely, you need to get into the habit of leaving the lid up and the seat down so your cat can get into proper position to use the toilet. You also need to get into the habit of keeping your bathroom door open when it is not in use.

Turning Your Attention to Your Cat

Now that you have trained yourself to create the proper setting for your cat, it is time to focus your attention on your cat. First, you need to simply move your cat's litter box so it is in the bathroom and located on one side of the toilet. Make sure you show your cat where the litter box has been moved to and give your cat a few days to get used to the new location.

After cat has become accustomed to the new location, put something under the litter box in order to raise it up about an inch. You might use a cardboard box, newspapers, a phone book, or anything else that can successfully and safely elevate the litter box a little. You will then continue adding height to the litter box until you have the box up to the level of the toilet. For some cats, you may be able to add a couple inches per day. Others may be less tolerant and you will only be able to raise the box an inch every few days or so.

Moving to the Toilet

With your cat now feeling comfortable with the height, it is time to move the litter box to the toilet. Then, after waiting for your cat to appear comfortable with the change, get a metal bowl and fill it with cat litter. This bowl will go inside the toilet bowl for your cat to use. If you are lucky, your cat will keep its front two paws out while it uses the litter box inside the toilet. If not, you will have to gradually teach it to keep its paws out. Either way, your goal is to get all four feet on the toilet seat with the front two in the front center and the back to straddling the sides. Teach your cat to keep out one paw at a time until it is finally keeping out all four.

With your cat successfully squatting on the toilet seat, you now need to start reducing the amount of litter in the bowl. Do this gradually until there is none left. Then, start to gradually add water to the bowl. After you have reached the stage where the bowl is quite full of water, you can remove the bowl and your cat will now be successfully toilet trained!

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
how many days does it take a cat flea to complete its life cycle?

    • ANSWER:
Fleas have four main stages in their life cycle: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The total flea life cycle can range from a couple weeks to several months, depending on environmental conditions.

ADULT: The adult flea is very flat side to side. There are hair-like bristles on the flea body and legs to aid in their navigation through pet hair. Fleas have 3 pairs of legs, the hindmost pair designed for jumping. Fleas are well known for their jumping abilities.

Adult fleas prefer to live on the animal and their diet consists of blood meals courtesy of the host animal. The female flea lays white, roundish eggs. The adult female flea can lay up to 50 eggs per day1, 500-600 eggs2 over several months.

EGG: The eggs are not sticky (like some parasites), and they usually fall off of the animal into the carpet, bedding, floorboards, and soil. When the flea egg hatches varies -- anywhere from two days to a few weeks, depending on environmental conditions. The larva emerges from the egg using a chitin tooth, a hard spine on the top of the head that disappears as the flea matures.

LARVA (plural = larvae): The larval stage actually has three developmental stages within this stage. Larvae are about 1/4" (6.35 mm) long, and semi-transparent white. They have small hairs along their body and actively move. They eat the feces of adult fleas (which is mostly dried blood) and other organic debris found in the carpet, bedding, and soil. Depending on the amount of food present and the environmental conditions, the larval stage lasts about 5 to 18 days (longer in some cases) then the larva spins a silken cocoon and pupates.

PUPA (plural = pupae): The pupa is the last stage before adult. The adult flea can emerge from the cocoon as early as 3 to 5 days, or it can stay in the cocoon for a year or more, waiting for the right time to emerge. When is the right time? (Never, say pet lovers everywhere!) Stimuli such as warm ambient temperatures, high humidity, even the vibrations and carbon dioxide emitted from a passing animal will cause the flea to emerge from the cocoon faster. This brings us back to the adult flea.

  2. QUESTION:
Flea life cycle: amount of time to develop into a adult flea?
i found a few larvae on my cat, so i carefully took them off of her and put them in a glass cup(covered)
do you know how log it may take for them to develop into adults? im not sure how far along they are though..
all i can say is their larvae and their 1 mm in length

    • ANSWER:
After hatching, it takes 2-4 weeks for larvae to turn into adult fleas.

  3. QUESTION:
Why am I still seeing "flea dirt" on my cat almost 2 months after starting treatment with Advantage?
I read that Advantage kills fleas before they bite so they can't lay eggs and therefore breaking the flea life cycle but if they are supposed to be being killed before they bite then WHY am I still seeing specs of flea dirt throughout my cat's fur?! Flea dirt can only be there if in fact the fleas are biting and pooping the nasty specs out. I have had an exterminator come out to treat my apt. almost 2 weeks ago and have been vacuuming every day or every other. I initially washed all bedding after the exterminator sprayed everything and try to wash bedding often. I do not allow the cat to lay on my bed or my sons. However, he loves to sleep on our couch. I vacuum our couches almost everyday and find at least or two of them crawling. If my cat gets up from napping on the couch, there almost always is a flea or two left behind. I don't know why I'm seeing them so easily now. I just don't understand how Advantage flea medicine works. I realize it is going to take some time before my home is flea free but I feel like if the fleas are biting my cat and laying flea dirt then they must be laying eggs too. I thought the flea would die right after biting my cat or just contacting my cat's skin but if I'm seeing flea dirt this can't be true. They're obviously living long enough to poop out the nasty specs! Anyone know something I don't? Any advice would be appreciated!

  4. QUESTION:
Fleas ! How to get ride of them on kittens and mamma cat. Does anyone has a non toxic solution?
Kittens are 9 wks. old., and we have fleas everywhere. Washing with dawn soap and flea combing was really useless! Once the kittens were wet, I could see lots of fleas, but they stuck to the kittens' skin, and would not come out with a flea comb (I could catch maybe 3 fleas out of 50 with flea comb and dawn). The mother cat and kittens clawed me real good, and some bit me. I'm well aware of the flea life cycle, and the fact that the environment has to also be throughly cleaned on regular basis. However, I really need to get those fleas off the animals too (it's really bothering them). I don't want to use any heavy chemicals. Some natural stuff is toxic too. I use Diatomeceous Earth on the carpet and the couch some times, and each time cough, and have headache for several days. I've tried vinegar and water, lemon wash, etc.; nothing has worked that well. Can anyone suggest something non toxic for the kitties? Does Cedar oil sprays really work? (they are expensive ).
Thank you for all your suggestions. However, I think the the term "non-toxic" solution to the flea problem is being missed in my request. Frontline, Advantage, etc. enter the animal's blood stream through the skin, and later lodge in their liver and kidneys, causing problems later on. Borax is poisonous. Dawn dish soap and flea combing ( as I has mentioned in my initial description did not work (I know some people say they've had results, I didn't. Not even a dent was made by this approach, read my initial description above). So........... If there's any other non - toxic solution that comes to mind, please............. let me know. Thanks to all who responded, and those who will respond after this.

    • ANSWER:
Dawn (or Joy) Detergent and water... it does work. We use it all of the time at the clinic with kittens as young as 2 weeks old. Perhaps you did not use enough detergent.

FYI, your kittens are old enough for Frontline. I know you mentioned you did not want to use any chemicals, however, you need to get those fleas off your cats before you house becomes infested, before your kittens become anemic, and before your cat/kittens get tapeworms.

  5. QUESTION:
zodiac indoor aerosol spray + chinchilla dust? will they work well together, to eliminate a flea problem.?
I have a cat, who has fleas, she's been treated.
I am treating the environment with the following :
zodiac indoor aerosol spray + chinchilla dust (diatomaceous earth).
How long before I break the flea life cycle? In Chicago Area, in October?

    • ANSWER:
PLEASE DON'T USE ZODIAC!!!!! This product is poison and not at all safe. Go to your vet and get Advantage. I had a friend of mine's cats die because of Zodiac. You may pay more but it's safe for the cat.
      Chanda

I would NOT buy it on eBay. I've heard that there's fake Advantage sold on there or it's imported from other countries. Try the link below. Diet Tips For A Healthy Cat

Most of us know that feeding our cat is not really a chore at all. Dump the food in a big bowl or dish, and the cat will eat when it's ready. Unlike a dog, cats tend to not overeat and therefore are more easily manageable than most other house pets. However, we need to be careful when assuming that the food that we are feeding our cat, and the manner by which we feed our cat, are the best choices for our cat. Here are some tips on how to maintain a healthy diet for your kitty.

Feed your cat based on their activity.

Is your cat an active cat or does it to lay around the house all day waiting for its next meal? If your cat is overweight and not very active at all, leaving a bowl full of food is probably not the best idea. It is at this point that you should begin to manage how much you feed your cat, what you feed your cat, and how often. By taking charge of your cat's feeding habits, you will be able to increase the life and longevity of your cat by making this simple and easy choice. A simple "Here kitty kitty kitty" will make your overweight and hungry feline run for the bowl to eat your rationed healthy amount of cat food.

Watch the weather!

Simply put, the environment in which your animal lives directly affects and influences their energy needs. Extreme hot or cold weather can increases a pet's energy needs and drinking habits. Make sure that on hot days water is readily available and that you feed your cat more canned food then dry. The water content within the canned food will help the cat retain water if it is not able to get to the water dish on a regular basis. If the weather is cold, make sure that you are feeding your cat very nutritional cat food that is not full of filler so that your cat will have more of the necessary nutrients to digest to ensure that it stays healthy.

Cat feeding times

Although discussed previously, there is much more to say about having a specific feeding time for your cat. Not only does this allow you to feed your cat nutritional canned food, you will also know that it will not be left in the open. Preservatives are nice, but let's not take any chances with the food left out.

Also, by having specific feeding times, this allows you to monitor your cat's diet by providing the food at regular times. It is a kind of portion-control feeding, however, most cats will simply eat until they have what they need.

Bottom line: keep a bowl full of a regular dry cat food and monitor the intake of canned food to ensure that your cat does not get overweight and is as healthy as it can be.

Buy the best

Though this sounds economically wrong, the truth of the matter is this: cheap cat food usually is cheap because of the added fillers that are put into the food.

As a general rule, cats need a daily regimen of protein found in meat, fish, or poultry. They also need an essential amino acid called Taurine and various other vitamins, minerals, and fatty acids.

If you have looked at a label for cat food, you will notice that wheat, rice, and even corn is used as filler for both canned and dry cat foods. Make sure that the cat food that you choose has the proper amounts of protein, vitamins, and minerals and not as much filler. The price of the cat food usually justifies its quality. And, as an added benefit, cats usually only eat as much as their bodies need. Therefore, your cat will probably eat less of the expensive of cat food because it contains more of the nutrients that it needs and not as much filler.

Avoid food addictions

Cats are said to be finicky animals. Whether this is true or not, cats have been known to develop a certain affinity toward particular brands and types of food. This could become a problem, especially if your cat develops a food allergy to certain ingredients and preservatives that may be contained within that cat food.

In order to avoid this, it is recommended that early in a cat's life that it gets used to having different varieties of cat food and different flavors. This way, the cat is less likely to develop an affinity for a particular brand which may inevitably lead to the cat developing a food allergy because of the lack of variety in its daily diet.

Overall, by avoiding cat food products that have chemical preservatives like BHA, cornmeal, and other carbohydrate fillers, you should be able to maintain your cat's health at an optimal level.

Planning Is Taking Advantage Of Risks

Author: Claude Jollet

Planning is the management of risk … while there are no risks involved (yet), and while it is still safe to take action … proactive action, that is! Planning is being able to recognize friends from foe … before going into "business battle". Planning is the dressed rehearsal before the premiere. Here is a "behind the scene" look at what the planning process is all about.

An Eventful Journey

Many (too many) aspiring entrepreneurs see the business plan as a set of documents describing their intentions and aspirations. Planning before going into business is much more than that!

Business life is made up of events that occur sequentially, from cause to effect, as well as simultaneously, randomly, and spuriously. These events can occur within your sphere of influence, as well as on the periphery. They can, and will, also occur far removed from your knowledge … apparently harmlessly!

Each event can be a source of risks and opportunities for you and your business. Consequently, planning is the process by which you aim to maximize the beneficial effects of the latter, while minimizing the adverse effects of the former.

A risky situation or event gives you the opportunity to put into action a counter measure that will benefit your business. You will have some of those measures planned, hopefully! One of the major advantages of a planned counter measure is that you can put it in effect … while your competition is still destabilized!

A Picture Is Worth …

Any successful entrepreneur will tell you that you have to picture yourself going through the motions, to know how to react when the time comes.

Rehearsing lets you discover which events - and situation within an event – you may not be ready for. Planning lets you do just that. When you find you would not know how to react in a given situation, you can visualize your actions - before, during, and after the given event or situation - and test them for effectiveness. While still "off stage", you can rehearse your moves until you find the proper ones to do.

Before The S… Hits The Fan

I mentioned that there are actions that have to be taken before the event. That is perhaps the most important part of planning. If you do your business research right, you will find that there are undesirable events you can indeed avoid, by simply avoiding the actions - or inactions - that will put you in trouble! You can easily identify these negative moves with proper planning. You can eliminate them from your winning scenario, before they have any chance of harming your business. That is what being proactive really means.

During The Storm

Nobody can foresee everything. Planning helps you eliminate as many unknowns as humanly possible. However, there will be times when things happen so fast, or in an unforeseen way, that you can be destabilized, even driven into a state of panic. You can avoid dangerous false reactions during a potentially disruptive event. You can avoid being overcome by doubt. You can practice reacting in front of the unknown. You can rehearse to react in a controlled fashion.

Remember though that the best defense is offense. Proper planning is a potent form of offense. Your competition will never know your state of preparedness … until it's too late!

After The Wind Has Died Down

That's when you take advantage of the good moves, and you recover - hopefully unharmed - from the bad ones. You can learn how to do that too! In fact, your business cannot grow if you cannot master the art of taking swift advantage of a favorable situation … and of swiftly recovering from harmful ones. With proper planning, and training, you can learn how to recognize both, and take appropriate actions.

Planning … Takes Planning

As you might have guessed by now, planning itself … takes planning and practice! Before going into business, get a professional trainer to help you go through the moves with a training (learning) plan that will suit your needs. Get a coach to help you work on your mindset and resolve. In other words, do not hesitate to seek the help of reputable people who have been there, and done it.

The professional trainer, and coach, will help you:

* identify what you have to take into account,

* see the business game, play by play,

* avoid getting lost in rehearsing false moves,

* go through the motions, in a professional manner, before you go into action,

* plan how to recover from your mistakes.

In short, they will help you build your confidence, and competence, one small - planned - move at a time.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
    Advantage 18?
All of my cats have fleas right now (it's sad, I dunno how they managed to get them), but we are treating them with Advantage 18. However, we don't have the box that it came in, so I was hoping someone knew how many drops to use per cat.

    Thanks so much!

    • ANSWER:
Advantage 18 is for cats 9-18 lbs. If the cat is smaller than that, use 1/2 of a tube.

Actually, if you want to split a dose of large canine Advantage (NOT AdvanTIX), then it is 0.4cc on a small cat under 9 lbs. and 0.8cc on a cat over 9 lbs. You'll get a lot more for your money this way as there is 4.0cc in a large tube of dog Advantage. We tell our clients this all the time.

  2. QUESTION:
What is the difference between Advantage and Advantage 18 flea medicine for cats?
Both are in purple packages and say for over 9 pounds.

    • ANSWER:
Did you buy them from a reputable source? There are lots of counterfeits out there. There's Advantage 9 in an orange package and Advantage 18 in the purple package. That's it. If you got a free sample it may not have the 18 on it.

PS - I was snooping around and it looks like they may have changed the packaging. The purple is still over 9 pounds, the orange is still 9 pounds or less, but no numbers as part of the name. If in doubt, call the manufacturer and ask.

  3. QUESTION:
i put advantage 18 on my cat thursday night and he is acting funny?
he is not eating, laying around dazed, and has now started having slava coming out the side of his month. what should i do

    • ANSWER:
Take him to the vet ASAP and stop using that advantage 18 crap on him. He might have gotten some in his mouth and swallowed it and it's super poisonous. It could be killing him.

  4. QUESTION:
What is the difference between regular Advantage flea medication and Advantage 18 (for cats)?

    • ANSWER:
Advantage 9/18 (depending on weight) just works for fleas. Advantage Multi covers fleas, worms, and ear mites and requires a prescription from your vet.

  5. QUESTION:
What's the main dis/advantage of 18" rear wheel with 17" front wheel on motorcycle?
    like the title says.

the wheel(s) are on a racing motorcycle. i really want to know what's the dis/advantage of this setup in racing world.

    • ANSWER:
well i know if you move forks up and down on a motocross bike it changes up the way it rides. when the forks are lower the bike goes into corner braking bumps better. the higher the forks the better you can corner but you can lose controll on bumps and stuff. so i would say you can prolly corner better but you have less control. but im just a kid so what do i know.
