Fleas- A Common Resident In Every House

Author: Kevin Pederson

They are one of the greatest bloodsucking parasites which can cause lot of damage. These different types of fleas live by sucking blood from mammals and birds. Some of the very common fleas are the cat flea, dog flea, human flea, northern rat flea and oriental rat flea. You may suffer from an allergic reaction and may also get transmitted with severe diseases due to these fleas. Because of the warm, humid and readily available environment in your home, these fleas easily survive without much hindrance.

They procreate in huge numbers which makes them next to - indestructible. Many a times these fleas just become a nuisance other than anything else. Their small fish like structure goes unnoticed which makes it difficult to detect. Presence of pets in your house is another reason for fleas to attack humans. Having a spick and span environment keeps them off from your mattresses. The growth rate is so high that it becomes next to impossible to end the reign of terror. Some of the common affects fleabites have on us is loss of hair, severe allergic reaction - rashes, itchy skin and severe diseases.

Home Remedies for Fleas

Keep your house clean by regular vacuuming as well as cleaning and bathing your pets to avoid any circulation of these parasites.

One of the most natural repellents which we have come across to fight fleas is the eucalyptus leaves. Somehow the smell is a major turn off for them.

You can use borax, which works great against the fleas. Spread it across your house; let it sit for some days and later vacuum your house to remove those fleas.

Spreading cedar chips along your fence line or in your room can keep the fleas at bay. You can also have a tansy plant outside your dogs' pen to keep the fleas away.

Make garlic an important part of pets' food. Mix it, crush it, mince it, powder it and use it in any form to keep the pest away from the pets.

Adding yeast pills in your dog's diet also gets rid of the fleas. These yeast pills can be easily found in any of the medical stores.

Try diatomaceous earth, is one of the most natural ways to get rid of fleas. It can used be in your house, around the house and on your dog.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
I have no pets, but there are fleas in my house. How long will they eat me before they die of starvation?
I think when we moved from our old house (flea infested) we carried some fleas along with us. And now they are attacking me like crazy. At first I thought that they would die off, because they dont have much to eat.. but that doesnt seem to be the situation. How long will they live, just off of me?

    • ANSWER:
You need to spray your house.Spray your carpets and furniture with an aerosol that contains a IGR (insect growth regulator). This type of spray will kill the adult fleas and also prevent the flea larvae from developing.

  2. QUESTION:
Can someone tell me how to get rid of fleas in the house other than exspensive store bought items?
Our dog has our house full of fleas! All 4 of our children have flea bites all over their bodies.Including my husband which has flea bites over 95% of his body! I have bought 3 different flea house sprays.None seemed to have worked. Also what to put on my family to get rid of their bites?I've been using benadryl cream and neosporin for the open bites they've scratched. Please help! Thank you!

    • ANSWER:
No name brand surface spray works well inside. As does crunchy crawly spray ( are you in Australia?).

You will need to fork out money to overcome this problem.

You will need to treat the dogs ASAP to stop the breeding cycle.

The flea bombs do work if you use them as directed and get the correct amount for your size house. They wont help if the dogs still have fleas though as the fleas will just reenter the house.

Malwash is in a tin in the pet section of the supermarket, it stinks to high heaven but is about the only thing that will work on the dogs and the backyard and the pet sleeping areas. It is good value. tin will last ages as you dilute it 30mls to 2L water.

The top of the range flea products that you put on their skin monthly, I found useless. Flea collars are useless as is flea powder and flea shampoo.

You wont get rid of the bites that are already on the skin, they will go as they heal. Open bites need to be treated with an antiseptic.

you could try RID or another insect repellent in the meantime for on everyones skin.

Fleas carry diseases, this is one of those situations where you need to fork out the $ no matter how much it hurts.

      They will not go otherwise.

From experience, I'd advise the flea bombs for the house. Surface spray for the house, dog drench solution for the dog and it's sleeping areas outside.

      good luck

      Jo

  3. QUESTION:
What is the best thing to use to get rid of fleas? House, yard and on pet.?
I have put ortho season long granules on my yard. Sprayed and fogged my house. Give my dogs flea baths every 2 or three days. And put Seagents flea drops on their back yet I still have fleas. Help!
I have two schaunzers. Is one drop that the vets carry better than the others?

    • ANSWER:
place laurel (bay) leaves around the house (on the floor, where the dog rests/sleeps, around the doors. Leave them about for a few days. I leave them about for a week, and bingo, no fleas. Don't have a clue why or how it works. Someone told me about it. I thought they were nuts, but figured have nothing to lose and it worked. crazy, I know.

  4. QUESTION:
How do I know if my house has fleas?
My boyfriend's co-worker came to work with fleas, and that evening he found flea bites on his arm.

He vacuumed everywhere he went in the house, and washed the clothes he was wearing, and showered a couple times, but woke up in the morning with more flea bites.

I don't have any flea bites! Do we have fleas in our house?

    • ANSWER:
Before you go to bed, get some soapy water and put a lamp right next too it, when you wake up in the morning you will see whether or not you have fleas.

  5. QUESTION:
How to treat house for fleas when pregnant?
I am 24 weeks pregnant and our doggies have fleas! They are going to the vet in a few days for their yearly booster and we are getting flea meds while we are there. My question is, how do I treat our home for fleas while I am pregnant? Is there a safe way to get rid of all the fleas in my house that won't hurt my baby? I don't think they are too bad yet, I don't really see any fleas, but my dogs keep digging and scratching at themselves and I had 3 little bites on my leg the other day.

    • ANSWER:
I'm highly allergic to fleas and pregnant. I had to go stay at my friends house for 4 days while my bf treated our apt with powder etc.

Consumer Debt Advocate

National Debt Relief Program

Consumer Debt Advocate

Choosing a good consumer debt advocate is one of the first steps towards becoming debt free. We offer resources at the end of this article. A good consumer advocate program is one that will listen to your needs and work diligently and professionally on your behalf to effectively lower your debt, offer a consolidation program, and establish a blueprint for getting you out of debt as quickly as possible.

The reasons why millions of Americans are flocking to a good consumer debt advocate is clear these days: it's the economy. Working class America has been battered, bludgeoned, and clobbered on all sides since the U.S. economy nosed dive faster than Lindsay Lohan's acting career. Think about it. Let's review some of the latest facts and figures concerning the economic crisis in America today:

According to the last Department of Agriculture update, Americans on foodstamps has increased by over half a million in August, hitting a shocking all-time high of 42.4 million people relying on the government for basis sustenance. At least now we know where that labor force is going. The August number is a 17% rise from the same time a year ago. That number is up 58.5% from August 2007, before the recession began.

Food stamps have become a lifeline for workers who have lost their jobs, particularly among the growing share of unemployed Americans who have also exhausted their unemployment benefits. Lines at grocers at midnight on the first of the month have signaled that, in many cases, those benefits aren't tiding families over and they run out before their next check kicks in.

Consumer Debt Advocate Fights For You

A good and trusted consumer debt advocate can work on behalf of those who are in debt to right their finances, lower debt, and in many cases offer additional consumer debt advocate services which can include but are not limited to such things as establishing a monthly household budget and negotiation with a person's creditors to restructure debt to obtain debt forgiveness and debt restructuring as well.

At the end of the day, a consumer debt advocate can help a person to get out of debt on a fast track basis so that they can get on with their lives. To get started with a consumer debt advocate program, please visit National Debt Relief Program.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
What does advocate not cover in dogs?
    Hi,
Was just wondering what Advocate for dogs does not cover, worms, ticks etc so i know what else i have to add for my dog to be covered for everything

    Thanks,

    • ANSWER:
Call them and ask what they cover and what they don't.

  2. QUESTION:
Advocate for dogs, do you still need to worm them?
    Hi,

If you use advocate with your dog once a month do you still need to worm him every 3 months?
Not sure if you still need to worm them?

    • ANSWER:
Dogs MUST be wormed every 3 months - the person that answered otherwise has no idea what he/she is talking about! Advocate is an all-in-one treatment that covers intestinal worms as well as heartworm, so NO, you do not need to do a quarterly worming as well. I use it with all of my dogs as well as the Advantix for flea and tick prevention.

  3. QUESTION:
How long after you apply Advocate for Dogs do you have to wait before you can bathe your dog?

    • ANSWER:
Shampooing or bathing 90 minutes after treatment does not reduce the effectiveness of Advocate in the prevention of heartworm disease. Previous studies with Advantage have shown that swimming or bathing with a mild grooming shampoo does not significantly reduce the effectiveness of imidacloprid against fleas. Use of keratolytic or degreasing shampoos may affect the residual activity of topical parasiticide products for ectoparasites such as fleas.

Where can I buy Program or Advocate onine for my dogs w/o a prescription?

bestpet.co.uk accept prescriptions but must be written by a vet and can give you meds for 50% less this site is not endorsed by me am just a pet owner, and its not spam it is just a Uk site i suggest for cat / dogs frontline and things to bypass the vet appointment if you know your dogs body weight etc. and have a prescription.

Pet Flea Treatment

PLEASE DESCRIBE THIS IMAGE ...

Natural Flea Control: How To Have A Flea-Less Pet

Author: Ras Reed

Not many pet lovers are enlightened to know that it is very feasible to have flea-less pets. And the good news is that you don't have to  burn up all your hard earned  cash on  doing away with these unwanted  visitors on your pets and around your home. You can  achieve it naturally. Let's  look at some of the things you can do to  accomplish a flea-free environment for you and your pets.

What type of pet do you have? I want you to know that having a flea-less pet is only  possible if you have short haired pets. In other words, long haired pets are haven for fleas. So,  dispose of the long hair. This makes it feasible for you to see if your pet is infected and the work of cleaning him or her is made easy.

Another way to have a flea-less pet is  making sure that your pet stays indoor  every time. This keeps him or her away from playing with infected pets in your neighborhood.  Additionally, it keeps him or her away from sleeping in dirty places that are haven for fleas. It is a fact that fleas thrive on dirty areas and so the best way to  proscribe them is to have a clean place around you and your pet.

Another thing you should look into is the beddings. It is highly essential that you give your pet clean bedding. Wash it  regularly with hot water. This get rid of any fleas that may be present. If you want to permanently get rid of them from the beddings, it is  advisable to use eucalyptus. You can also make use of lavender oil. These are good repellent that will keep them away for good.

If you still  notice the presence of fleas on your pets and in your home after doing the above, it is essential that you clean the entire house. You can vacuum the whole house as it helps  dispose of the eggs. Cleaning your house should not be once in a while. Do it  regularly. This is the best and natural way of getting rid of fleas permanently from your pets and your home.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Flea treatment from Pet Stores? Which type work? Do they EVEN work?
I don't have money for the more expensive types, so just want to know if those actually work.

    • ANSWER:
They do not work for cats. DO NOT buy them for a cat or for a dog that lives with cats. That stuff is highly toxic and will kill your cat. We have had so many severly ill cats come in to the clinic I worked at because of these products.
If you are hurting for money, the cheapest thing you can do is go to the vet and ask to buy Advantage or Frontline by the tube, rather than by the box. Each one should cost about dollars. If you have a really bad infestation, ask your vet of a pill called Capstar. It works within 15 minutes, but it only kills adult fleas and only works for about 24 hours. You will need Frontline or Advantage as a back up and to continue killing fleas. I recommend Frontline because it kills all stages of the fleas.

      Good Luck!

  2. QUESTION:
does any one know if there is a flea treatment for a baby mouse at a pet shop or vets ?
I think the mouse is about 2 weeks old.

    thank you in advance.
tcgymnast88 thank you i will pass on the kisses but only when iv got rid of the fleas lol.

i will take the baby mouse to the vet first thing tomorrow, thanks guys for all your answers they have been very helpful

    • ANSWER:
Aww bless! I'm not sure. Phone a local vet and they will be able to tell you. I wouldn't give him anything without checking with a vet first because some flea treatments that are good for one type of animal can be harmful to another. They each need their own type of medication that is specifically for them. Good luck.

  3. QUESTION:
Is Fronline flea treatment working for your pet(s)?
I've struggled for months with finding the reason & cure for my dogs persistent scratching, licking & chewing, thinking it couldn't possibly be flea allergy because I was using the trusted Frontline treatment on her. Even the vet told me it was either food allergies or something she comes in contact with outside. When a change of diet didn't cure it, I paid a high price for routine allergy shots. When that didn't work I changed vets only to learn their office had been swamped with clients with the same problem & apparently fleas had become resistant to Frontline so this vet now offers Comfortis flea treatment, which I'm going to try when my dog is due her next flea treatment. If you search this Frontline question on Y Q&A, you'll find members claiming Frontline hasn't been working as far back as a year! What a waste of money & such unnecessary extended discomfort for these pets!
Anyone else here having the same problem with Frontline? If so, what have you found to work best for your pet(s)?
Considering 'mcally's answer, I wonder if only fleas in certain areas have become resistant to Frontline? Or perhaps a defective batch of Frontline was shipped to certain areas? I never had a problem like this in the 10 years I've used Frontline but's it's definitely a problem among pet owners now, here in Missouri.

    • ANSWER:
I've heard that too. I used Revolution on my Ferret when she had earmites; it takes care of mites, ticks, fleas, and any other parasites your animal might have. Worked just fine for me, but I'm sure in a few years it won't be effective either.

  4. QUESTION:
Why do many vets ask to see pets before issuing flea treatment ( and charge for it)reason is for extra $ or..?
Or, that the vets want to verify for example that the pet does not have pubic lice instead of fleas (lol). With the initial "consultation" visit, the total fees for just one flea treatment can easily exceed a hundred dollars. Why have an initial consultation ( and fee )?

    • ANSWER:
To make money. Problem is they are all pesticides and none are safe on our pets or around us. If you insist on using them you can skip the vet and buy on eBay. Ironic that the very person that should be keeping our pets safe are doing just the opposite.

I stopped using them and now use more natural methods of flea control like diatomaceous earth.

  5. QUESTION:
Is there a monthly flea treatment for ferrets like there is for dogs and cats?
I use "Revolution" to keep fleas, ticks, and misquitos off of my two cats and dog. Every now and then though, I find a little demon on a pet. My ferrets however, have no treatment on them. They are all itchy. I can't see fleas but I know they are getting bitten by em every now and then since of course, unavoidable, there are a few in my house. Is there a monthly flea treatment for ferrets as well?

    • ANSWER:
You can use revolution or advantage on ferrets, but call your vet to find out what he recommends for them and what dosage to give them. I have a tiny little girl, and a big, bumblebutt boy and I have to measure out the boys dosage in a syringe, but I can just count drops on my girl.

Feline Advantage

12 Month Supply Feline ...

Feline Harmony in your Multi-cat Household

Author: B Goodman

The number of happy and successful multiple cat households is huge, but they are not without their challenges.

Living in groups, cats normally develop a pecking order and often revert instinctively to latent, wild behaviors. To minimize conflict, you should provide each of your pets with their own safe zones, including places where they can sleep, play, scratch, eat, and eliminate. Here are ways to make sure your pets are healthy and content together:

Keep each litter box fresh In a multiple cat household, cats need to have more than one community litter box. Ideally, there should be one more litter box than the number of cats. Each cat should have access to his or her own box, with at least one litter box on every floor and easy to get to in an emergency. Make sure that each litter box is scooped daily, or even more as necessary.

Cope with spraying The risk of urine marking is greater when several cats are present. Using a room-wide calming pheromone applicator like the Feliway Comfort Zone Plug-In or Feliway Spray on marked sites and on prominent objects will help reduce or discourage spraying. Eliminate problem stains with an enzymatic cleaner like OdorLogic® CleanAway.

Provide suitable personal space Cat trees, with multiple levels, and furniture with hideaways, perches, and scratching posts situated in separate rooms can accommodate the social order and provide ideal hangouts.

Maintain fresh water Be sure to keep water bowls in multiple locations and keep them supplied with fresh water. If one or more of your cats prefer drinking from your dripping faucet, get a Drinkwell Pet Fountain, which provides a continuous circulation of filtered water.

Cater to individual nutritional needs The individualized feeding of cats is a challenge, especially if you have one or more cats that each require a special diet. Maintain individual feeding bowls in different places and, if necessary, in a closed room.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Can you give feline Advantage to a queen with 3 day old baby kittens?
I know the packaging says kittens have to be 8 weeks old, but this ferral queen mother cat has newborn kittens and she has fleas! Help!

    • ANSWER:
NO! i know it sucks but just wait...or if u put it on the mom then keep her away from the kittens for a couple days but dont put it on any of them of they're going to be together

its very dangerous they could lick it off eachother or something

  2. QUESTION:
Is there a difference between Advantage Multi Feline flea drops and generic brand?
I've noticed there's about a twenty dollar difference. Is there anything special about Advantage?

    • ANSWER:
Yes advantage works, the others are not as effective
      Advantage:
      * stops biting fleas in three to five minutes.
      * kills fleas quickly, which helps reduce the risk of secondary problems such as flea allergy dermatitis and tapeworms.
      * within 12 hours, 98-100 percent of fleas are dead.
      * kills over 99% of flea larvae within 20 minutes.
      * kills 100% of chewing lice within one week and lasts for a full month.
      * waterproof.

Some other brands, are actually dangerous for cats, and do have have a high success rate. Like they say you get what you pay for.

  3. QUESTION:
Does a double-thumbed feline have an advantage or disadvantage over "normal" paws?
I've never had a kitten with extra digits, and for the first time, I do. I don't see any differences, other than the shape of the paw, but I wonder if the extra digit is considered an advantage or a disadvantage for her. Her sister has "normal" paws. They are both fluffy Tortoise-shell kittens, not that breed makes any difference, LOL.

    • ANSWER:
I don't think polydactyl cats have any advantages or disadvantages with their extra toes, other than that the mutation makes them even just a smidge cuter. I have a cat that has two extra toes on each foot and she's not unlike any other cat I've ever had. :)

I don't know if I'll be able to say the same when she discovers she has what look like opposable thumbs and learns to use them- LOL.

  4. QUESTION:
Cat drooling excessively...feline Advantage flea meds?
I mean she is REALLY drooling, it is just pouring out of her. Could it be the topical flea medicine, Advantage, that I put on her earlier? What is going on here?
She isn't drooling anymore, it turns out that she licked some of the Advantage and that's what caused it. Thanks

    • ANSWER:
I know that Frontline spray can cause drooling and they probably use the same/similar chemicals.

  5. QUESTION:
What to expect after feline treatment of tape worms?
My vet recommended that I get Praziquantel Tape Worm Tabs Feline from Tradewinds and I did. I gave him the dose approximately 5 hours ago and he hasn't gone to the litter box since. What should I expect to happen? Will he pass one large tape worm? Will it take a couple of days to get out of his system completely? Anyone else given their cat this medication and it had diarrhea or dehydration? I also have him on Advantage now for the fleas so I have that part covered.

    • ANSWER:
After treatment, the tapeworm dies and is digested within the intestine. Generally, entire tapeworms or even tapeworm segments do not pass through the stool in most cases. Rare side effects are sometimes reported such as vomiting or diarrhea.

      Good luck!
