How Can I Keep My Cat Off the Kitchen Counter?

Author: Jenny Jackson

Firstly, cats like heights, and chances are your cat likes the tables in your home too. The kitchen however probably smells better than other places in the house and no doubt your cat has been rewarded for his or her forays by finding various tasty tidbits on the counter. My cats are very good at finding empty tuna cans unsurprisingly! These cans look empty to me, but the cats always find a few morsels to enjoy, or just the flavored oil. When we put these straight in the recycling, the cats spend much less time on the counter.

If you have a trash bag or container on the kitchen counter, this will likely be a target for your cat as well. Try keeping it under the kitchen sink, or you can try lining the lid of your trash can with double sided sticky tape. Cats don't like getting sticky paws. You will have to replace this regularly however, as it loses its stickiness. A closed container may work too, if you remember to keep the lid on tightly.

If you aren't fussy about your counter surface, you can try lining the edge of your counter with double-sided sticky tape too, or covering your counter in cling-wrap, as cats don't like the feeling of this under their paws.

Many cat owners use a spray bottle to deter their darlings from the kitchen. In my experience, cats are wise enough to connect you with the squirt bottle and so may stop venturing onto the kitchen counter when you are around, but if there are still great attractions up there, they may well visit when they know you can't see them. You can also try turning the faucet on them when they are in the sink.

If your cat is attracted to toys on the counter such as sponges or paper towel rolls, you can try putting these in a closed container or out of sight.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
How can I get rid of my cat's fleas?
My cat has a lot of fleas, so I took him to the vet and I used what they gave me, the fleas went a way for a few months but then came back as strong as it started. How can I get rid of the fleas?

    • ANSWER:

  2. QUESTION:
How to naturally rid feral cats of fleas?
    HELP!
I have 2 feral female cats that have taken up residence in my yard almost 2 yrs now and they are infested with fleas which in turn infest my yard. I can not go outdoor without spraying "off" on myself. I know that the feral cats would be more healthier and deserve that if I could find a natural flea remedy that can be placed in the food as they will not allow me to get near them close enough to touch let alone treat. PLEASE HELP!!
    Thank You

    • ANSWER:
I used the beneficial nematodes in my garden when I moved in 14 years ago and have never had to worry about fleas on my cats since. I do have cat fence-in so my cats stay on my property and don't have a dog to walk who might bring fleas home.

The nemetodes are something you use in the fall and then the fleas are gone for the next year. So it's not an instantaneous response.

There is a flea medication (Program, I think) that you can put in food and cats are notorious for avoiding food with any human "additive".

  3. QUESTION:
How can I get rid of Fleas without getting rid of the Cats?
Okay, so I have two cats, they both caught fleas in the spring. We found out over a month ago and did a lot of stuff for them such as having an exterminator spray the house, clean everything and vaccum daily, give the cats medicine, give the cats a special spray made by Hartz, and used a special spray on the carpets. We've seen some change, but little, and my family is getting bitten by the fleas. My mom wants to get rid of the cats but I want them to stay, any suggestions?

    • ANSWER:
Hartz is one of the worst things you can give a cat. Revolution is one of the best, it covers the fleas, ticks and a variety of mites. I've used Frontline spots for years but it doesn't nearly do as good of a job as the Revolution. You do have to get this from your vet. As far as the carpets, there is a product called Cedarcide and it is all natural, it was originally designed for the government for use in the desert to protect against sand fleas. You can spray the Cedarcide on your carpet, on yourself, on your pets even, but not if you're using the Revolution. If you use it exclusively on your cats you will have to use it at least once a day because it is a kill on contact spray, it smells like Cedar and it's quite pleasant. It kills a host of other parasites as well including spiders, roaches, scabies, and mites of all kinds. You can even use it for bedbugs. It's a wonder, we have used it to rid ourselves of infestations that exterminators can't control. http://www.cedarcidestore.com The product we used is called 'Best Yet'

  4. QUESTION:
Has anyone used brewers yeast on their cats to get rid of fleas?
My cats have fleas and I just want to see if anyone knows how well brewers yeast works?

    • ANSWER:
I have heard of adding brewers yeast to pets diets to eliminate fleas. So far, from my experience as a veterinary technician I have not seen it work yet. I have not read any studies, journals, or articles published in veterinary medicine claiming it works either.

It shouldn't hurt to try a small amount in supplementing in food. Supposedly the thought behind the supplementing is to alter the taste or smell of the skin to deter fleas. How well this works? Well, as I stated before... no one has a clue.

*IF you run across people telling you that onion powder or garlic powder will work on fleas do not take them up on this advice.
Garlic and Onions have compounds that trigger a disease process called Heinz-body anemia in cats and dogs. This disease causes the destruction of red-blood cells in their body and can be fatal.
      Just an FYI ;)

  5. QUESTION:
is neem herbal pet spray good for cats to rid of fleas?
i just bought neem herbal pet spray at the health food store, i have a flea problem, is this good for cats also. And how about eucalyptus tea bags,

    • ANSWER:
If herbal was so fantastic we'd all still be using it....use Advantage!!

Flea Bath For Cats

How to Give a Cat a Bath

Flea Control Guidelines - What You Want To Think About

Author: Paul Kramer

There are many flea control products, which are specifically made for the control of fleas from your home. But there are also chemicals, which can control fleas but leave harm effects on your pets so they must be avoided on every cost. There are flea shampoos for eliminating the fleas from your pet hairs. You should bath your dog every day so fleas cannot make those hairs their habitat at the first place.

It does not happen also that you bath your pet and fleas are controlled. It is highly important to realize that shampoo does not last longer. It only lasts a day or two. So bathing your pet with flea control shampoo is a must, which you should do. The affects of shampoo on pets are too little so there is nothing to worry about the effects of these shampoos.

There are many people who use flea dips for the killing of fleas. These dips are strong flea control chemicals, which are being used not only for the elimination of fleas but also ticks and mites. But they leave highly bad effects on the pets. They last for one to two weeks but they should only be used in case of mite infestation. There are some other people who use flea collars for killing fleas. This is a toxic gas, which immediately kills the fleas and more effective for adult fleas.

There are also flea powders and sprays, which last two to three days but also effective for elimination of fleas, their eggs and larval development. There are spot-on-treatments which are applied on the shoulder blades of the pet. They last for one month and are highly effective for adult flea control. But before using all above guidelines, it is better to consult your veterinarian who can guide you in the best lines.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
What are alternatives to a flea bath for cats?
I have 3 adult cats and we moved into a new apartment and now they have fleas. I tried to flea bath one of them and he freaked. What are some alternatives to flea baths? I'm having my landlord treat my apartment.

    • ANSWER:
Goodness, flea baths are dangerous and can be toxic to cats,as can flea collars. Many cats are ill afterwards, some even die. All you need is a drop on the back of the neck medication from your vets, he will also sell you the correct stuff to treat the apartment. You must be very careful what you use around cats, always get it from a vet.

  2. QUESTION:
What is the best flea medicine for cats?
Ok, so during the summer months where I live the fleas are EVERYWHERE. Last year we had to have our yard treated 3 times with pesticide to knock down the population. Giving two cats flea baths is NOT fun!

    • ANSWER:
There are three good, safe products. Revolution, Frontline (or Frontline Plus) and Advantage. All are sold through veterinarians and FosterSmith.com. You can also get Frontline and Advantage at Petsmart.

The nice thing about going through your vet is that they will sell you one dose at a time if you need it, which nobody else will do. If your cats go outside, Revolution is really great because it kills fleas, ticks, roundworms, and ear mites, too. Whatever you decide to use, use it every month without fail. I use Frontline Plus on my dog every month and my indoor cats have never had fleas.

Stay away from Hartz and other OTC products, which don't work and have been known to kill pets.

  3. QUESTION:
Flea bath for cat turned the water red?
I just gave my cat a flea bath and there was a lot of red (blood?) in the water? Is that normal? Should I be concerned about it?

    • ANSWER:
This was the result of dried blood on your cat from fleas feeding on him...if it was enough to turn the water red I would think your cat might be anemic from having so many fleas. This is NOT normal. Also, a flea bath is NOT going to control the fleas, any fleas in your house (in carpets, couches, etc.) will just jump right back on the cat, and any unhatched eggs will hatch. You need a long term flea control such as Advantage or Frontline, these will kill the fleas and the eggs. Baths do nothing but kill the fleas on the cat at the moment, and usually does not even kill ALL of them.

  4. QUESTION:
Cat flea bath any good? I Love it! ?
It seems no one trust the cat bath for flea treatment.
I don't quite understand. I use this treatment once before and it worked just fine along with a new collar on my cat.
I also like how it kills the bugs and allows me to pick off the fleas dead rather than chasing them all night alive with some tweazers.

    just my thoughts.

I think the Flea bath is awesome just as long as you follow the directions and rinse kiteh off well.

What are your experiences and thoughts?
@ qat - wow barn Nail hu? Well my apartment is pretty safe from such objects tee hee! So sorry to hear about Kitteh getting hung on something like that though.

    • ANSWER:
I think they work well also.
I like the flea treatments like revolution better though. For a new foster kitten covered in fleas they get the bath first and then a treatment like revolution to make sure they don't come back.
      I don't like flea collars.
I had a cat that hung itself on a large barn nail by it's flea collar so I refuse to use them and stick to the revolution or advantage.
I'm glad see someone else that takes the time to make sure their pets are loved and comfortable.
      Have a good day.

  5. QUESTION:
How soon after administering Advantage cat flea medicine can I bath cat with flea shampoo?
    shampoo is pyrethins .05%
    N-Octyl bicycloheptene.50% in
    pyriproxyfen.01%
    99%b.s. filler baby shampoo ect.
it is my understanding that since the meds/poison is absorbed into the skin and released via the sebaceous glands i could do this soon after drying some 24/hours later, i love this cat and dont want to OD him also know i am moving him from an infested punk squat to a super clean penthouse condo with two clean well cared for cats I had else where and taking fleas with is not an option.

    • ANSWER:
You don't need to shampoo with Advantage. It will take care of the fleas. Using multiple flea treatments together will seriously harm your cat. If he doesn't die from the overdose of poison, it can damage his internal organs to the point of failure. Just stick with the Advantage. It's very safe and effective all on it's own.

Flea And Tick Medications

Flea and tick medications ...

The Bouvier des Flanders

Author: Greg Hames

Adopting a Bouvier des Flanders is a lot of fun, but it is also a big responsibility. When you become a Bouvier des Flanders owner, it is up to you to make sure that your pet's needs are met including, the proper care, environment and companionship. If this sounds like a big commitment - it is! But rest assured, the rewards of pet ownership far outweigh the work you have to put into it.

One of the most important things you can do to make sure your Bouvier des Flanders is safe is to insure that he is properly trained. Believe it or not, many people do not see to this important task and then wonder why their dog jumps up on visitors or won't listen to their commands. Many a dog has been considered a a€œbada€ pet when all he really needed was the owner to take the time out to train him properly.

Proper training isn't just about performing cool tricks, although that is one side benefit. A properly trained dog will be safer than one who is not trained. If your dog is properly trained, then you will be able to call him back to you should he be heading towards a dangerous situation. A well trained Bouvier des Flanders will not be a nuisance to guests and training your dog is also a bonding experience and will enforce the fact that you are the a€œmastera€. You can train a dog on your own, or you can join an obedience training class and get instruction from professionals.

The Bouvier des Flanders is a large but gentle dog. Having a tendancy to dominate this dog should be trained with a firm hand - you must let it know that you are master but never be unkind in training. The Bouvier des Flanders will learn quickly and consistent training will help him to remember the commands.

You want to make sure your pet is as healthy as can be and part of Bouvier des Flanders ownership is to take your dog the vet every year and as needed in between. A yearly physical exam should be performed and any vaccinations updated. Also make sure you put him on the right heartworm and flea and tick medications. Also, if you notice anything different in your Bouvier des Flanders behavior schedule a vet appointment right away. Even a subtle change could be a sign of trouble and it's better to be safe than sorry. Have your Bouvier des Flanders neutered or spayed - they WILL be much happier.

Providing a safe environment for your Bouvier des Flanders is up to you as the pet owner. Make sure there are no sharp things or broken glass, nails, pins etca€¦ that your pup could hurt himself on. Make sure your guests and family knows that the dog should not be let out unattended. Refrain from feeding your Bouvier des Flanders food from the table as some of it can be harmful.

Grooming your Bouvier des Flanders can help your pet look and feel his best. Brushing his coat, trimming his nails, cleaning his ears and around the eyes are all part of good dog health. Proper dental care is the most important grooming task you can do for your Bouvier des Flanders. Bad dental care for dogs can have much more serious affects than just bad breath. Bacteria can build up inside his mouth, aside from the pain of rotting teeth, the bacteria can migrate throughout the dogs system and cause some serious health problems. Brushing every other day is recommended!

Finally, you must be sure to include your dog's welfare in any household emergency plans. If there is a fire, floor or other type of emergency, your dog probably can't get himself out of the house so a member of your family must take that responsibility. It's not a bad idea to have a designated person that can mind your dog on short notice if you get called out of town on an emergency.

Bringing a Bouvier des Flanders into your home, it is a lifetime commitment to provide everything he needs. Some Bouvier des Flanders can live for 15 or more years and the rewards of having one will be much more than the work you have to put into it.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Does anybody know of any natural flea and tick medications for dogs and cats that actually work?
My family and I are thinking about using natural flea and tick medication after hearing some stories about the other kinds being harmful.

    • ANSWER:
When you mean natural, do you mean like remedies? Or do you mean ones you can get from a store that is harmless. well, i don't know any remedies, but you could go to PetSmart. They have everything there. I have a two month old puppy that has fleas and ticks. I bought a bottle there and it said at the back, that it shouldn't be used for puppies under 3months of age. But a person there said to use it. So I did and it worked! It worked like a charm!

  2. QUESTION:
Are there any flea and tick medications that are not topical, like a pill, perhaps?
What is the best flea and tick medication?

    • ANSWER:
Frontline, stronghold and advantix ampoules are not topical. You put them on the back of the animals neck and it is absorbed by the entire skin, it doesn't act only on the spot you put it on. Careful, they are not drinkable, they are applied on the animals back! The same applies for collars.

  3. QUESTION:
What flea and tick medications work best on dogs?
I have tried several and just wondered if anyone out there has an idea on which ones work. Thanks!!

    • ANSWER:
      K9 Advantix

      bl

  4. QUESTION:
Whats a very good flea and tick medication for my dog and cat?
Both my dogs are over 90lbs ( german shepherds)

Both my cats are about 10lbs, but they have sensitive skin and get "burned" ever time i use flea medication on them so i need something that wont hurt the cats.

    • ANSWER:
Revolution seems to work wonderfully for my 2 cats. To date, they've never had any adverse reactions. I don't have any personal experience with Revolution for dogs, but I do have a friend who uses it on her 5 and is very happy with it.

  5. QUESTION:
what do you think of tick/flea control are they safe?
my dogs get vectra-3d (the vet said ticks/fleas are becoming immune to older meds like frontline) and we are in a highly populated tick area plus lyme disease is high risk here. they get a lyme vaccine too though. what do you think about the flea/tick medications, do you think they are harmful? do natural remedies work just as well and what are they? thank you!

    • ANSWER:
I have discussed all medications and vaccinations with my Vet who participates in long term studies on these topics. He told me that Frontline never goes past the skin barrier and thus will not negatively affect any internal organs, while tick collars do penetrate the skin layer and will affect the kidneys and liver. I don't know about the product your Vet has suggested, but I would ask him if it stays in the skin or passes through.

Cat Flea Bomb

Bob Martin Flea Bomb - Pet ...

Flea Life Cycle

Author: Alfred Ngoasheng

Please allow me to present you this topic as it won't take long before you will get to know everything about it.

If you are suffering from a flea infestation, understanding the flea life cycle can help you form a strategy that can for good get rid of fleas from your home. However, before you begin to eliminate the fleas that have taken residence, you need to understand that it takes a little over two years to substantiate that no more fleas will get back to your household. Click Here

The first stage of the flea life cycle is the least harmful to humans, but the most problematic. This is the egg stage. Female fleas will deposit her eggs on people, pets and surfaces, laying up to fifty eggs or more in a single day. This can lead to the production of hundreds of eggs per week, all of which could become a female flea ready to lay more eggs. It is critical that a flea infestation is nipped at the bud, and female fleas are prevented from laying eggs.

The second and 3rd phase of the flea life cycle is the larvae and pupae stages. This is the development of the flea inside the egg. The larvae cycle can last from two days or more, with no chances of the egg hatching during this stage. It is the pupae stage that can cause problems. Ranging from two days to two years, the pupa lays in wait for a good chance to hatch. It is very difficult to kill fleas that are in these stages, as they are protected from chemicals by the shells of their eggs. However, especially potent chemicals have the power to break down the structure of the egg and kill the growing flea within.

The final stage of the flea life cycle is the fully grown flea. These are the creatures that cause problems for human beings and pets, bite, and usually trigger at least two weeks of misery as people and pets recover from the damage of a flea bite. Many of the treatments available target the grownup flea, as preventing the adults from breeding is fundamental in destroying an infestation.

Knowing how long the flea life cycle lasts can help you make certain that you maintain the regime until the last of the eggs has died away. Having your home maintain a very low humidity and coolness will help foreclose the egg from ever hatching, which is fundamental to preventing a new infestation from occurring. Treatments of Borax soap, Front Line, Advantage and other flea killing substances will prevent any eggs that do hatch from starting another infestation. Click Here

With a little care and effort, you can keep your home flea free, allowing you to live in comfort.

Well that's the end of just one of my many articles please keep reading my other articles.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
My house has been bomb and cat flea dipped and he still has fleas?
My cat has been to the groomers and got the works flea bath and dip I also bombed my house for the fleas while he was at the groomers. Thing is my cat still had fleas when I got him to the house and ended up using kill on contact flea spray and rinsing him but he still has some fleas not as many as he did when I brought him home what can I do to get them all? Really need help with this.

    • ANSWER:
You can't get them all unless you're planning to deflea every mammal in your neighborhood.
As for the cat, put a flea collar on him.

  2. QUESTION:
anyone used a flea bomb to banish cat fleas, if so how did it go using it was it easy?
did it make somoke alarms in house go off,was it smelly, did it take long, did it leve a residue on stuff, and does it get into electical things like tvs.
i bought a bomb (fogger) y mistake meant to of bought a upolstry flea spray
    no stupid answers please

    • ANSWER:
I used one about 13 years ago. It does leave a residue on furniture.

I have since moved to other methods. 13 years ago the topical flea treatments were not available and I have not had a problem with fleas since then.

That was at my son's house and the cat died with lymphoma at 13. We don't know what is causing cancer in cats (or people) at this point so I would urge you to try something less toxic.

  3. QUESTION:
Need to flea bomb my house. Where can I take my cat?
It's the middle of winter, and somehow my indoor cat got fleas. :-O

I need to use a flea bomb in the house, because I am being eaten alive!! Where can I take my cat during the time that the house is being bombed? I can't put him outside, it's 0 degrees out.

    • ANSWER:
Flea bombing the house will do little except put toxins onto everything. It may seem to stop the fleas for a while, but what is happening is flea eggs that have been laid (bombs don't kill them) will still hatch and be more resistant to the chemicals. If you do bomb, make sure you wash everything thoroughly, and throw out food that isn't in cans.

Use a topical flea med like Advantage (from vet, pet med sites, or deeply discounted on eBay). It kills the life cycle, and you will find monumental relief in about a week. Keep up the treatment and you will be flea free without hassles, bombs, or disruption.

  4. QUESTION:
what happens with flea cat bombs?
i only have them in my room basically... and some in my bathroom
i have hard wood floors :[.and i vaccumed and washed all of my stuff
they came back even after i washed my cat

dose a flea bomb leave an odor, or affect my clothes in anyway.
whats the best flea bomb to get?

    • ANSWER:
i don't think so. i hung out at my friend's house once after he flea-bombed and i didn't notice any smells or anything. i have no idea what he used though, and it was maybe 6 hours between him bombing and us hanging out.

  5. QUESTION:
will my cat be ok in the bathroom with the door closed and a towel under it while ai flea bomb the rest of my?
i had 2 cats, now i have 1, i have flea bombs or foggers , will my cat be ok if i put her in the bathroom with a towel uner the crack while the bomb is goin off in my apartment?

    • ANSWER:
It depends upon how well the door seals against the door frame.

I have bombed the house and had the cats with me in the back room with towels at the bottom of the door.

Not even a small amount of the scent of the spray came into the backroom, I checked several times, and we were all okay.

This was years ago and there have been no effects on me or the cats.

If you are concerned about it, you should remove the cat from the house when you bomb the house.

Most of the foggers tell you that you can re-enter the rooms or house after two hours. That is a short enough time that a cat could spend it in a carrier or even the car.

Where are you going to be while the house is bombed? Take the cat with you if you are really concerned that the fog may get into the bathroom.

You could sit outside with the cat in a carrier or even just put it in the car. You won't have to stay in the car with it. Just put a litter box in the car just in case.

  3. QUESTION:
I gave my dog flea medicine and now she has the runs, does she need to go to the vet?
Last night I gave my dog a flea bath and then applied Sergeants Natures Guardian Natural Flea and Tick Squeeze-On to her shoulder blades area as directed. The Natures Guardian is all natural ingredients. And the flea and tick shampoo was supposed to be mostly natural as well (I think I bought it at whole foods or trader joes). This morning my dog has diarrhea. She has pooped three times and it is mushy and getting all over the back of her and it had a yellowish orange hue leaving a stain on her backside. Other then that she seems to be feeling okay, she is active and playing with toys as normal. Is this something I need to rush her to the vet for this morning? Is there anything I can feed her that might stop the runny poop? Do I need to wash the Natures Guardian squeeze-on off of her right away?
    Any help would be great.

How soon after giving your dog flea drops can you give him a bath?
I just gave my dog a dose of his monthly flea drops but now he is stinky and needs a bath. How soon after the drops can I give him a bath without ruining the drops effectiveness?
he doesn't stink because of the drops- the drops smell pretty good actually like citrus. No he smells like outside! Like a dog smells sometimes.
Of course I read the box before I posted this question- I wouldnt have asked if the answer was on the back of the box!

    • ANSWER:
I know of no effective flea contol that smell like citrus.
The only flea prevention that is safe and effective is Frontline,Revolution and Advantage products.
Once you apply these products your pet must remain dry for 48 hours or duration of action will be compromised.

Please only administer flea control.that is dispensed by a vet or lisenced pharmacy.
Avoid caustic and questionable treatments by Bio Spot,Sergeants,Hartz as they can make you pet extremely ill.

No bath 48 hours prior to administation of flea prevention and 48 hours post administation!

  5. QUESTION:
How long would revolution or frontline or other flea products last for a dog?
Just wondering how long these products last to give the dog flea protection? I am really concidering it now since one of the dogs got fleas i think. and what cost is it in canadian dollars, I think its around 80.00, but not sure? Does it last a year?

    • ANSWER:
I normally use frontline but after speaking with my vet and using it for a long time they seem to become resistant to it and you may have to use it every 2 weeks. You are better off going with revolution or advocate if you have it. I am in Australia and it costs about 40 aus dollars for 3 frontline.
