Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Can someone tell me how much K-9 Advantage flea preventative is in the ampules for larger dogs?
I need to economize. The Vet bills are sky high. We want to divide K-9 for larger dogs between 2 small dogs, 8 and 15 pounds. We know there is .4 ml in the smallest and 1.0 ml. in the next size so I need to know what size to buy and share it between the two.
    Thanks for any help given.

    • ANSWER:
Divide the 1.0 ml between the two dogs, but be careful.

If your dogs arent super tick/flea machines, have you considered Frontline spray? It's a way that we economized with farm cats...one bottle lasted the whole summer between about 6 cats, and wasnt super expensive. Just a thought.
      ADD: Here's a link:
      http://frontline.us.merial.com/products/products_flspray.asp

  2. QUESTION:
What flea treatment is best? Frontline, K-9 Advantix or Advantage?
Hi...I usually use frontline but it don't work too good. So out of K-9 advantix and advantage which do you prefer and which works best on dogs? thanks. I will be ordering mine offline.
I usually order my stuff off dog.com which I trust.

    • ANSWER:
I use Frontline...never had a single problem with it.

I have also used the latter 2, & they didn't last nearly as long as the Frontline Plus.
I have heard of other people complaining Frontline doesn't work for them & I am baffled as to why.

I would go with the Advantage if you are having trouble with Frontline working for you. Are you sure you are applying it to the skin & not giving a bath 2 days before or until 2 days after?

  3. QUESTION:
Can I switch from Frontline Plus to K-9 Advantage after only 3 weeks on Frontline?
I bought a Pug puppy who turned out to have a few fleas. The very next day after bringing him home, I went to the vet and bought some Frontline and put it on him, BUT it's been three weeks and it isn't working. In fact, I think it has actually gotten worse because I have found a few fleas and ticks on him since then. I haven't had any pets before and a few days before I got the puppy, I put Flea, Ant, and Tick Granule in my yard - basically did everything I could to prepare for his homecoming. I have washed him twice in Dawn Dish soap after reading that this was supposed to help and I rented a carpet cleaner and cleaned all of the carpets in the house. Any advice?

I gave him the Frontline on June 10, 2009 and today is June 28th - can I go ahead and switch him to K-9 Advantage or do I have to wait the full 30 days?

And please, no comments about how I need to take him to the vet - he has an appointment this week.
Thanks for the suggestions. Right now, the fleas seem to be under control as far as the house goes, but as you say, that doesn't mean it will stay under control for long.

    • ANSWER:
I would NOT switch at less than the recommended time frame, unless your vet says it's okay. You can end up with flea-product toxicity. Many of the products actually indicate (if you read the fine print) they last at 6-8 weeks for fleas, but 1 mo. for ticks.

Many people I know, have begun to have problems with Front-line not working, as well as it used to. It has been speculated, since it was the number one, flea "spot-on" product, fleas have developed an immunity to it. I do agree you should switch to Advantage or Advantix (what I switched to, btw) but WAIT to do so at the agreed upon 1 month, time-frame.

I also second the prior poster's advice, to again... shampoo the dog. Fleas can be removed, by bathing. It won't fix the environment, but there ARE products for that. Look into indoor sprays (ask your vet for recommendations). I don't care for bombs, which run you out of the house. Please read your advice sheet on Advantix to see how long after bathing, you can apply the product & figure that WAIT into your time-frame. Some products want the dog to re-establish some skin oils, so most can't be reapplied right after any bath.

In addition, look for/buy a flea comb to help groom out the fleas, while you wait to apply your new product.

  4. QUESTION:
Which Flea and Tick meds are better--Frontline Plus or K-9 Advantage?
I used Hartz brand but she still itches. And I want to change brands. I do check her every other day and she don't have fleas. Do they just itch just to itch? Or does it mean something?

    • ANSWER:
My vet told me that Frontline is safer especially if you have other animals in the home.

  5. QUESTION:
which is better capstar flea treatment, frontline plus or k-9 advantage?

    and which one works faster

    • ANSWER:
You are a bit confused - Capstar is a pill you get from your vet, it gets the fleas off the dog fast, as in within about an hour, it is NOT a preventative, it is a one-time flea removal.

You then need to put a topical liquid on your dog, every single month.
In my area, Frontline is no longer very effective, some fleas have developed immunity to it, so I use ADVANTIX on all my dogs, it prevents fleas, ticks and repels mosquitos.

So: Capstar for immediate flea removal, then Advantix every month to keep your dog flea free.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
When can I give my kittens flea treatment??? How to prevent ear mites!?
I have 6 kittens that are now 27 days old. When can I give them a spray treatment for ticks and fleas??? also is there a way to treat/prevent ear mites? If they are too young for treatment now, how old do they need to be??

    • ANSWER:
No, don't ever use a spray flea treatment. In fact, don't use any flea or tick treatment that you buy in grocery, pet, or feed stores on cats. Most are too strong for cats, especially kittens, and some don't even wiork.

At 27 days, I think your kittens are too young for any flea treatment, but possibly they could be given a diluted dose of Advantage or Frontline. Your vet could tell you and calibrate a reduced dose if they can have it. You would have to keep them separated from their mother for several hours so she couldn't lick the medicine off their fur...it's harmful if ingested.

If the kittens have fleas they are in danger because it doesn't take much blood loss from fleas to make kittens sick or even kill them. If they have fleas, take them to the vet immediately to save their lives.

Many kittens get ear mites. Again, this is something for the vet to treat. Kittens are very fragile and can easily be damaged or killed by the wrong treatment or too strong a medicine.

  2. QUESTION:
How long do I have to wait before I give 10 week old kittens another flea treatment?
My kittens are 10 weeks old, and I noticed they had fleas, so I sprayed them with the Frontline spray. The vet told me that this would be safe for them. However they still have fleas, and I wanted to know how long do I have to wait before I can give them another Frontline treatment, but this time not in spray form but in regular form? And would I have to split the dose in half since they're not that heavy?

    • ANSWER:
The active ingredient in Frontline is very non-toxic to mammals, although with kittens that young, you would want to check with your vet.

Perhaps it might be best to use a flea comb to keep the numbers under control and wait at least a week. And Frontline Plus might be better, since it has an ingredient to stop eggs from hatching that regular Frontline doesn't.

If they are only 3-4 pounds, and you have a dose for 8-10 pound cats, it should be all right to split the dose.

  3. QUESTION:
Multiple cats and kittens with flea treatment?
I have an older cat along with two kittens who everyday will lick and clean each other. I'm about to put advantage flea medication on all of them but how can I prevent them from cleaning each other while they have this flea medicine on them? Or is there another way I should go about this?

    • ANSWER:
before you use the medication on them, check with the vet, on kittens because of their age, using those chemicals are toxic cause they lick it off themselves. there is an age limit on the box. mine was too young, you might want to check with the vet first. also cause mine was so small they told me to get dawn dish wash detergent and put a small amount in a cup. i got a flea brush and dipped the brush in the water and brush the kittens. the dawn really works!

  4. QUESTION:
What are some safe flea treatment products for kittens and asthmatics?
We have kitttens and unfortunately, also fleas. Also, we have a daughter that is severely allergic to certain chemicals.

What are some safe treatment options for treating 15-week old kittens without creating a lot of breathing problems for our daughter?

Also, note that cost is a big consideration. We cannot afford expensive chemicals.

    • ANSWER:
Head and Shoulders shampoo - soap up the kitty, wait a minute or two - then rinse. The same chemical that prevents dandruff, kills fleas on the kitty.

Now - as for your house - go to your local home supply store and get a flea trap pad. It plugs in - and usually has a night light with it - and it attracts the fleas to a sticky pad.

Get flea collars for the cats.

All of these are slow solutions. It's all I know of without using insecticides.

      Peace.

  5. QUESTION:
What is the best Flea treatment for Cats & Kittens?
Advantage for Kittens and Cats (Both under and over nine pounds treatments)

    OR

FrontLine plus flea and tick control for cats and kittens

What do you use or recommend?
I have Three 3 month old kittens & One 7 month old kitten & a Young adult cat.

    • ANSWER:
I recommend the Advantage products. One day I was talked into trying Frontline because it dealt with the tick problem too. It didn't equal Advantage in that it took WAY too long to kill the fleas totally dead, and drove my cats nuts for a while. I vowed I'd never use it again. Meantime I have overheard similiar complaints about the Frontline, that confirmed my suspicions. Fortunately, Advantage Flea now has upgraded their product to include killing ticks. Revolution is also a very good product, but very costly.

How can I get rid of fleas for good?
I am having a really hard time getting rid of fleas. My cats are both inside and outside cats and they go outside and catch fleas from other cats. I have them all on frontline plus, and I have bombed the house with flea bomber recently. Every time I give them flea baths, flea medicine, and bomb the house the fleas are gone for a couple weeks but then return.

  3. QUESTION:
How do I get rid of Fleas?
I gave my dogs a Flea bath...how do I get rid of fleas Organically preferably.

    • ANSWER:
I used Advantage and it worked.

  4. QUESTION:
Safest way to get rid of fleas in a house with a 3 year old in the house?
I need the safest, fastest way to get rid fleas in a house
I'm guessing we brought the fleas in when we were outside playing with the dog and my daughter picked up a stray kitten. I've treated our dog and there are no animals in the house, just trying to get the darn things out

    • ANSWER:
Flea bombs are not safe for you, your daughter or your dog. Treat the dog with a safe topical flea treatment like Frontline, Advantix or Advantage. Hartz, Seargents, Bio Spot etc, do not work and can be toxic. By treating the dog, you are treating your house as well. Just wash all bedding, vacuum frequently and get some Borax (the old school remedy powdered detergent) sprinkle it on the carpets, around the baseboards etc and then vacuum it up. Fleas need a host, which would be the dog, so if the dog is treated with a safe, high quality flea treatment, they will eventually jump on the dog and soon die.

  1. QUESTION:
How do you get Frontline or Advantage for cats at the vet?
I live in Canada. And I am sure I can only get Frontline or Advantage from a vet. Now do I have to go through a dr, or can I just buy it at the counter when I get in there?

    • ANSWER:
1-800-pet meds also is a good one, but i am not sure you can purchase from Canada.

If you just go to your vets office, they should be able to sell it to you @ the counter without seeing the vet! I do it @ my vets

  2. QUESTION:
Anyone have experience with thriftyvet.com or other vendor for flea meds for cats?
I am buying Advantage flea medicine for my cat (Orange box, 9 lbs and under, either 6mo or 12mo pack, if that matters any). I have been comparison shopping. The best prices seem to be a couple of companies from Canada. I realize that there are some issues with counterfeit pet meds. I want the best price, but I want it to be legal and not counterfeit. Questions:

Anyone have experience with thriftyvet.com or budgetpetcare.com?
Is it legal to buy Bayer Advantage from Canada and have it shipped to the U.S.?
Any companies that I should avoid b/c of counterfeit products?

  3. QUESTION:
Does anyone have expierence with Zodiac flea treatment for cats?
I know the flea sprays sold at grocery stores aren't recommended, and I never buy anything for my cats at grocery chains.
I noticed fleas on my youngest cat (rescued) and I called the pet store I always go to. (They're amazing, have only the best food etc.) Which they recommended the zodiac. I've never heard about it before so I'm wondering if anyone has had experience with it? That's the only brand they carry because they don't trust any other spray.
BTW I live in Canada so I can't just buy frontline or advantage or revolution over the counter, I need a prescription for it.
I'm waiting on to hear back from a friend of mine who's a vet to provide a prescription for me.

    • ANSWER:
Yes...it was horrible! Made one of my cats sick & affected her nervous system (she has since recovered). Here's an article by someone else who had a bad experience:
      http://blogcritics.org/scitech/article/hidden-dangers-in-zodiac-spot-on/

If you're going to use chemical flea treatments, stick to Frontline or Advantage. However, I would recommend a natural remedy - there are quite a few out there (I even found some on ebay). Google "natural flea control for cats" and you'll get tons of information. Here is one article I found:
      http://cat-care.suite101.com/article.cfm/natural_flea_control_for_cats

Whatever you do, don't use Zodiac! :)

    My response:
    Hi Sarah,
Somehow your email got into my junk mail and I just discovered it. Are you still in need of a dog sitter? I can walk your dogs weekly if you'd like, I was thinking of about 15 dollars a day, and I can do it for 2 weeks. I am not a licensed dog trainer, but I do have some experience in dog training however. I do have experience in pet care however. I live in ******, right next to St. Luke's hospital. If you are still interested, let me know. Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
Its a Nigerian money mule scam, dont even respond and dont give your address for any reason. She will send you a fake money order asking you to deposit it and wire part of it to some other person but you are just sending your own money.
You can tell this isn't even written by a native English speaker. She uses small i's for the first person which is one of the biggest signs this is a Nigerian scammer.
You can report to the IC3 http://www.ic3.gov/default.aspx
These scammers post the same things all over the world and change their supposed location
Block her from contacting you again but unfortunately your name will now be on a scam list as you responded to one of the messages
