Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Vet advised Benadryl for my cat's flea allergy dermatitis, but is it safe?
For the first time in over five years, my cat has flea allergy dematitis. I called the vet and she advised 1/2tsp of of Children's Benadryl. The only active ingredient is Diphenhydramine HCI, which is an Antihistamine. It doesn't contain acetaminophen, ibuprofen or any other active ingredients that I know are toxic to cats!

A 1tsp dose contains 12.5mg of Diphenhydramine, so 1/2tsp would be 6.25mg. My cat weighs 7lbs, so that's close to 1mg per pound, which is the dosage she quoted.

But I'm still apprehensive??? For one, it's Cherry flavor, so I'm pretty confident that it won't go down easily. What does goes down may not stay down very well, either. But most of all, I'm worried about potential adverse reactions to the medicine.

    Any thoughts?

    • ANSWER:
If your vet said it, I'd fallow it. Trust me, it's safe for pets to have human medicine if your vet says it's cool. When our dog hurt herself, it was fine to give her Ibuprofen.

  2. QUESTION:
My cat has flea allergy dermatitis and so do I. Vet was not helpful. What can I do?
Have been treating my cat for fleas and the environment however both of us are allergic to flea bites and even when there are no fleas our skin are still reacting. Used frontline on cat, and sprayed apartment with Siphotrol about three weeks ago. Ever time I vacuum my apartment (to suck up any eggs/pupa in carpeting) I feel as though the fleas are reborn and start irritating my cat and my own skin. Vet told me to just brush my cat to help with itching but his allergic reaction is getting worse by the day and I'm worried he has a bacterial infection on his tail/back due to the biting etc. His skin is developing weird bumps and yellow crusts. Should I go to another vet? What can I do to cure our flea allergies?

    • ANSWER:
Yes take to another vet and get a second opinion. Also fleas hate eucalyptus leaves. If there are any of these trees in your area, you could put some under your mattress to help during sleep. Perhaps you could see if you could locate eucalyptus oil in a spray and use that around your house, where you seem to notice the fleas more, be careful though, it is poisonous to animals if ingested.

  3. QUESTION:
Is a breeder liable for vet bills if our puppy has a serious flea problem/allergy?
We just bought a Cocker Spaniel puppy on Thursday night. I had specifically asked the breeder if the dog had fleas BEFORE I decided to buy him and he, of course, said "no." When we got the puppy, I noticed he was scratching his ears and he pointed out that dogs always get itchy. I didn't think anything of it because our cockers always had ear problems. However, the dog has been scratching non-stop because he has fleas. We have 2 cats and have NEVER had fleas in our house or yard. Now I have to put all the animals on frontline, wash everything, shampoo the carpets, treat the puppy for some sort of dermatitis reaction to the flea bites, and spray the house and yard. The vet bill was 5!
I called the breeder on Saturday about the fleas and said how mad I was about the fleas. I asked for him to call me back. I've left 2 more messages since and he hasn't returned my calls! Can he be held liable for all these expenses? Please help! Thanks!
He brought the dog to my house. It was at night, but I had a light on. I looked at the dog, but I couldn't see the yeast infection in his ears or any fleas on him as he has beautiful thick fur and it's black and white. He doesn't have tons of fleas that I can see, but he has tons of flea dirt. That doesn't get picked up from a house in less than a day (I defnitely didn't have fleas here, and I disagree with medicating animals unnecessarily; my cats are strictly inside animals). BTW, the breeder over-vaccinated the puppy and the vet said he had a yeast infection in his ears. Regardless of whether or not he pays me, I'm filing a complaint with the ASPCA.
I know about the congenital health guarantee, but isn't a verbal agreement about the fleas standing? Thanks everyone for all the advice!
BTW: I put the cats on Frontline today because it's pointless to put the dog on it and not treat the rest of the house/pets. I'm allergic to fleas and would have broken out from their bites if we already had them. His puppy dermatitis (or whatever they called it) only appears on his belly near his hind legs...not noticeable to most people.

    • ANSWER:
The answer is YES! He lied to you about the flea infestation. I would hold him liable. The other problem is, you will have to prove your case in court. You will have to have all the documents, the bill of sale with date, the vets invoices with dates of treatment and possibly a witness besides yourself. This must have been a serious problem to have a vet bill of 5. Have a friend call this breeder, pretend to be a potential buyer, make an appointment to see the parents and other puppies. Then check for fleas on the parents and puppies, use a digital camera to take some photos for court. Make sure this person is willing to go to court with you to testify on your behalf. This breeder should be put out of business. Responsible breeders don't let their animals live in these conditions. At the very best he is a liar, at the very worst, a irresponsible back yard breeder, who only cares about the money not the animals.

So what do you do if you win....well, you now have a judgment and are left to collect the money on your own. You must know where the person works, has bank accounts, etc. If they own property, you can put a mechanic's lien on his property. You won't get paid any money until the property gets sold. If you're lucky, People's Court will call you and if you win there, they will pay you immediately.

I would also put an ad on Craigslist documenting the problem you had with the puppy from this breeder. Buyer beware!

      Good luck to you.

  4. QUESTION:
    Zodiac Spot On?
OK, I'm going to get both of my cats on Frontline soon, but I have to order it online....and since it will take a week or so to get here, I need to look into something else for right this moment. My female cat is experiencing Flea Allergy Dermatitis, so I need to get the fleas killed now. Is the Zodiac Spot On treatment any good? I've heard to not use Hartz products, but I don't know about the others. I'm planning on heading to the store soon....I just can't stand seeing her in pain.
    Thank you, dharmagirl!!!!
Thanks for all the suggestions! I did buy the Zodiac, but promptly returned it to the store after reading it's just as bad as Hartz. I don't know WHY I didn't remember that stores keep Frontline behind the counter...since I used to see it at our old pet store in the case. Anyways, I got Frontline Plus instead of Advantage because it kills fleas AND flea eggs, and Advantage only kills the adult fleas.

I appreciate everyone's concern, but the infestation isn't bad enough to warrant bombing my home. We didn't even know she had fleas....the vet couldn't even find any on her, he just knew she had 'em because of the FAD. And to answer one question; I couldn't get Frontline Plus at my vet because they don't carry it.

Anyways, both cats have been Frontlined. Thanks again!
Oh, and there was no way in hell I was gonna try giving her a water bath since she scratched the hell out of my yesterday when I tried using the waterless cat shampoo foam! Lol.

    • ANSWER:
You will cause her MORE pain using that stuff!! Bad product! Wait for the Frontline or go to the petstore and ask for frontline (they do not have it with their other products, you must ask for it). She's already hurting, itchy, scabby, etc. I have seen severe reactions from using OTC products. Please wait for the frontline.

Also, in order to treat her successfully, you MUST treat the home with an insect growth regulator (like nylar). Ectokyl is excellent, Virbac is great. Again, stay clear of Zodiac, Bio-Spot, Hartz...

Do NOT bath her with any soap! This will irritate her skin more!!

Also, do not use a product and try another a week later. You must wait 4 weeks - 3 minimally!! Reactions can and will occur if used too frequently!

  5. QUESTION:
    Natural flea remedies?
Anyone have anything that WORKS? I'm currently using Frontline on my IGs, but I'd like to go natural. I've never tried before, because I had a dog with flea allergy dermatitis so severe one bite made her miserable. I'd like to get these chemicals out of my house if possible.

I'm adventurous, so I'm open to anything! :)

2 IGs (10 mos and 2 years) - 1 cat (7 yrs) in the house.
    I'm in Los Angeles.

    • ANSWER:
i think lemon works the yellow lemon

Program Flea Cat

Natural, Green Odor Control for Dogs, for use in a Program of Veterinary and Pet Care

Author: al fleming

Many dog owners, typically have a difficult time reconciling themselves with their dog: they love them, but hate the fleas and especially that "doggie" odor. Very typically, the dog owner becomes so inured to the odor, that often they will not even notice it, until they're in the process of trying to sell their home. And even then, when the realtor suggests that they do something dramatic to kill the dog odor, but owners generally are surprised that anyone would even notice the smell.

If this is a typical experience you've had with friends, then take heart, there are some approaches with respect to combating dog odor that can be beneficial.

The Causes of Dog Odor

There are a host of reasons and circumstances that contribute to dog odor and many have much to do with typical dog behavior. The most often mentioned one is the fact that typically dogs roll around in the dirt and on the grass. This is a natural instinctive behavior resulting from the canine need to mask their scent from prey. Dogs, as we know, were originally domesticated from wolves.

There are other factors that contribute to an unpleasant "dog odor":

  • Diet
  • Outdoor activity
  • Weather conditions
  • Overall cleanliness

Dietary Approaches

There is a great deal of truth in the saying, "You are what you eat" One of the most obvious things that helps in controlling odor, to an extent, is providing a dog the best food that is available. Many of the common commercially available dog foods found in supermarkets are made of animal byproducts that most owners would be shocked at.

Poor food quality will definitely contribute to dog odor. There are many excellent dog foods formulated from organic and plant based proteins that will help to combat this problem. Additionally, using natural or green products is always the best way to approach most home/pet problems. Also, there are additives that will help a dog with general hygiene and enhance overall health. This normally will translates into decreasing dog odor.

Outdoor Activity Contributes to Dog Odor

When dogs run around outdoors, their skin excretes an oil that helps to keep the skin and fur supple and resist the elements. If your dog is basically a small lap dog, probably most owners usually restrict outside activity, but the dog's body and skin will still excrete a certain amount of oil into the fur. In any event, the oil/weather/activity combination that may be coupled with dirt will obviously contribute to dog odor.

Cleanliness

One of the first lines of defense is to bathe the dog. First, a dog owner will need to have the right shampoo. It is advisable to never use human shampoo on a dog. A dog's skin requires a shampoo with a higher PH than does a human. PH is a measure of the alkalinity/acidity of liquids. Good quality dog shampoos will typically have a neutral PH of about 7.5.

Shampoos that are designed for human usage would require a much lower PH shampoo; well below 6.5. The more acidic (PH <7.0) human shampoo drys out a dog's fur causing your pet to scratch frequently. Also, if a dog is bathed too frequently, even with a good, organic dog shampoo, the resulting dryness will contribute to the odor problem, as well. One should consult a veterinarian, but bathing more than twice a month for a dog is unnecessary, at best and does the dog a disservice, at worst. So the bottom line is to bathe the dog with a dog shampoo, but not too frequently.

If Pet Odor Persists, Other Natural Approaches for a Dog

There are commercially available natural, green dog shampoos that have a neutral pH, and will kill dog odor. The best are made from essential oils, like orange oil, lemon or grapefruit. These will chemically alter the oil in a dogs fur, neutralizing the unpleasant odors.

Of course, as the dog's skin continuously excretes the oil, this will be a continuing process. Additionally, there are sprays that contain some of the essential oils, as well. After spraying, the dog odor will dissipate for one to two days or so, but the dog can be re-sprayed with the above mentioned products, whenever the odor returns. When it comes time for a bath, merely repeat the process. The combination of steps as mentioned above, can radically eliminate most, if not all of your dog odor issues. Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Has anyone used the cat flea product, Program? If so, would you recommend it and if not, why?
I just discovered my two indoor cats have fleas. I can't figure out how they got them, but now have to figure out how to get rid of them. Is Program worth its cost or is there a better product? Also, any advice on how to get rid of fleas for good?

    • ANSWER:
If you've already got fleas, Program will not get rid of them. It does work, but it's designed to sterilise the fleas, not kill them. It's a preventative, to be used when they're aren't fleas already present.

Indoor cats are NOT safe from fleas. Fleas enter houses through any tiny crack, and there's no way to keep them out. They're attracted by warmth and movement because they know it means a meal.

Get a treatment from a vet - Frontline, Advantage, Revolution and Advocate all work well. They will kill the fleas on your cat within 24 hours, and keep them off the animal for up to a month - 6 weeks for Frontline Plus. Just make sure you get it on the skin of the animal, not the fur.

Take it from me you also need a treatment from your house - once fleas come in, they live mostly in your carpet/sofas, and they lay eggs there so you need to spray the house as well.

  2. QUESTION:
Can u put Degu's on a "Flea Program" that we use for cat/dogs?
Being that I just started to use the program for fleas on my cats, can you use the same stuff on degu's?

    • ANSWER:
I would not do that. Degus are VERY different from cats and dogs. They are much smaller and could end up being poisoned an end up dying.
If your degus have fleas (which is highly unlikely considering their size and fur), go to your small-mammal specialized vet and ask him/her what to do. They will give you a proper medication with a specific dosage. Don't do anything yourself without consulting with an expert first.

  3. QUESTION:
Which topical flea treatment to use on my cat if my dog licks her?
I have two indoor cats and a dog. It's ok for me to use Revolution on the dog and not worry about the cats because the cats will not lick the dog and would run away from him whenever possible. However the dog will lick the cat when he gets the chance to. I have heard that topical flea treatments for cats might be poisonous to dogs, which ones though? Also can cats use Program in conjuction with Advantage?

    • ANSWER:
If you keep your cats separated from your dog until the product is completely dry (a few hours), then it's fine for your dog to lick them. Revolution is waterproof once dry and won't come off when licked.

Actually, it's dog flea treatments that can be poisonous to cats - they are much more sensitive to the pestiside products than dogs are. There are some dog treatments that should not be used in households with cats because the treatment might rub off on the cat through contact. I am not aware of any treatment for cats that is not safe for dogs, too.

Many times different veterinary flea treatments can be combined because their mechanisms of action are so different. I believe it is safe to combine Program and Advantage - but your vet should confirm this for you.

  4. QUESTION:
What are some dangers of Program flea control for cats/dogs?
I've tried Frontline, Frontline Plus, and numerous other flea control medication and none of it seems to be working. I've heard about Program flea control that can be given to your cat in a tablet or liquid, which can placed in food, and it can also be used with Capstar, who are the same producers of Program. Now, I need to know how dangerous this stuff is. Is there a chance that it will kill my cat, or cause it to have seizures, or possibly put them in a comma? What should I watch out for? Any information about side effects is greatly welcomed.
I've been using Frontline Plus for about 7 months. It works for about one to two days, and then it seems to stop working. I've used Advantage in the past but one of my cats didn't respond well to the treatment.

    • ANSWER:
Program for dogs and cats is extremely safe as the product is designed to work on chitin formation, which fleas have, but dogs and cats do not. Program is designed to sterilize the eggs that are laid from the adult fleas on the pet. Program does not kill the adult fleas, so you will still see those. Capstar is a very short acting (few hours) adult flea killing product, but it does start killing the adult fleas within an hour. Normally the animal hospital I work at will use the Capstar as a quick adult kill and apply Frontline Plus or Revolution for long term adult flea kill.
How long had you been using these other flea products? It takes a minimum of 4 months with correctly applied topical flea control product like Frontline plus to break the full life-cycle of the flea. Program will take long due to how it works.
The reason that you may still fleas even when applied properly is the flea needs to get on the pet to get the chemicals in the topical products. The pupa stage (cocoon stage) varies in emergence times from a few weeks to a couple of years. Not many chemicals work on the pupa stage and once the flea is inside the casing not much can get inside it. All the mammal pets in the household should be treated. Fleas will take blood from just about any mammal, although they do prefer pets over people. Not enough time has lapsed to get the pupa stage and they are starting to emerge.

  5. QUESTION:
Are baths to be given to cats after giving the Program/Capstar flea pill?
I am going to start my three cats on the Program/Capstar flea control program. The directions don't state this, but am I supposed to give my cats a bath with flea shampoo the day after administering the Capstar pill? That pill works for only 24 hours and I would assume that to remove the dead fleas from my cats, I'm supposed to give them a bath with flea shampoo. Does anybody out there have experience with this? Thank you!
The Program is a pill that lasts for a month. I don't know if it would take the place of Advantage or Frontline. I have used that stuff that you put on the back of the neck, but I do think it was Hartz and you are correct - it didn't work. I was planning on ordering Frontline. The Capstar pill works in killing fleas for only 24 hours. I do know that because I've already given my cats a dose of that pill.
By the way, I neglected to mention that I am already cleaning/vacuuming the house every other day. I'm using Borax on the carpets & rugs and also washing clothes, sheets, and tumbling pillows on the high setting in the dryer in case the fleas are in the pillows. I do know that I have to treat house & cats simultaneously.
My cats are indoor only. They never go outside.

    • ANSWER:
Capstar is great for a temporary solution however you must apply a monthly prevention in order to provide good flea protection.
DO NOT BUY A GENERIC FLEA MED - Like Hartz or Adams - They are worthless and are a waste of money.

Frontline Plus, Advantage or Advantix work really well.
      Revolution works wonderfully as well.
There is a new pill out that is much alike to capstar except its call COMFORTIS - It lasts pretty long (Ive seen it work up to 3 months)

You need to vaccum your house really well after you have administered prevention mentioned above - empty it OUTSIDE - do not steam clean your rugs as it will hatch flea eggs.

Flea Control: The In's and Out's of Getting Rid of those Pesky Critters

Author: Nathan Lynch

Bleh - fleas! 'Tis the season - are you prepared? It's not just at home where you need to be ready either. Different geographical areas have different climate conditions so the flea season varies depending on where you are - keep that in mind whether you are at home or traveling. Something else to be aware of is that fleas, in various stages of their disgusting lives, can survive indoors even during the cold weather. Following are some helpful facts about fleas and information on how you can prevent them from infesting your pets and your home.

Even though there are more than 2,000 known species and subspecies of fleas, only one class of flea called the 'cat flea' is to blame for almost all the fleas found on cats and dogs in the United States. What is really daunting is that there is evidence of fleas dating all the way back to the dinosaur era which means they obviously aren't going away by themselves - all the more reason to do something to protect your pets and family.

Most fleas can survive for an average of two to three months without 'food' which is actually the blood they suck from their 'hosts'. A female flea consumes 15 times her own body weight in blood daily! You should also know that while adult fleas suck blood from a cat, dog or other mammal, their larvae live and feed on organic debris in the host animal's environment - that's your home! Be aware that some fleas can jump 150 times their own length - that compares to a human jumping 1,000 feet. So if you happen to see one flea, there may be more than 100 offspring or adults looming nearby in furniture, carpeting or on your pet.

Now let's talk about how to prevent these gross little parasites from getting into your life and how to get rid of them if they do. As a pet owner, one of your main responsibilities is to keep your pet healthy. Taking them to the vet for their annual check ups is very important. While you're there, be sure to talk to your veterinarian about a flea prevention method for your furry friends such as Advantage, Advantix or Frontline. Certain products can also help to prevent ticks in addition to fleas.

If you see fleas on your pets or in your home, take action immediately. Not only are fleas a huge annoyance, but they can also transmit diseases and tapeworm. If your home becomes infested, you will probably need to purchase flea bombs - make sure read and adhere to the directions carefully and contact your vet to get further advice and relief for your pet and family.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Is Hartz and Adams a good brand for flea protection on dogs?
If both are, which one is better or what do you prefer? I have a 7 month old border terrier who weighs 12 pounds. :) And if you think neither is good, which one do you think works best? I tried Frontline and it was pretty good. My dog is currently using a flee collar which I hate and Frontline is pretty expensive. I saw Hartz and Adams at a store and it was pretty cheap for a 3 pack. Thank you for your responses!

    • ANSWER:
Both are not good for topical treatments. They are prone to cause reactions and niether are effective. The adams spray for your yard works well just not the topical solution for your dog. Collars as you've found do,kt work either. You need to use a vet quality brand like advantage, advantix, frontline plus, revolution, etc. Revolution is a good one because it does everything from fleas and ticks to heart worms and parasites. If your pup is in water a lot frontline is the most water proof. To help make them cheaper which ever brand you deside on you can order online once you get a presciption (advantage and frontline do not need prescriptions). Online is ussually cheaper and right now drs foster and smith website is running a sale on preventative making them even more affordable. Also buy the biggest quantity you can. It's more up front but is less per dose making it a better bargain.

  2. QUESTION:
What is the best on line site to buy flea protection for dogs?

    • ANSWER:
Believe it or not you can bath your dog in pine-sol. I have been using it for years. I ran my bath water and put pine-sol in the bath water and bath my dogs twice a week.

In a world that many say is over medicated, it's time to get back to the more natural ways on how to improve our dogs health.  There isn't a magical pill or ointment or serum that is going to drastically improve your dogs health; a dogs health is a reflection of how well their owner is taking care of them.  So how can you improve your dogs health?

The first thing that you need to take a good hard look at is what you are feeding your dog.  You dog needs to receive the correct amount of nutrients each and every day to prevent any number of dog diseases and other ailments, such as dog cancer.  Some things that you should definitely avoid in your dog's feed are:

  • Artificial dyes and colors
  • Preservatives
  • Less "filler" products (such as corn and whey)

Look into better quality dog foods, or consider supplementing with your own foods at home, such as whole chicken breast, fish, and other natural, whole ingredients.

Fresh water is another important element to your dogs health.  If you aren't changing your dog's water dish several times in a day, then your dog doesn't have fresh water available to them.  Water not only hydrates our pets, but it also helps flush out the toxins that are in their system.

TIP:  Avoid plastic food and water dishes when ever possible. Stick with stainless steal, glass, or porcelain bowls.

Now for another rather obvious but often forgotten way to keep up your dogs health: exercise.  This isn't to say that you need to run 10 miles with your dog every morning and each evening, but your dog should be getting two 45 minute walks a day for his health. Exercise is not only exercising his heart, muscles, and ligaments.  Exercise is also exercising his brain!  Your dog needs to stop and sniff and "check the daily news" as he makes his rounds around the block.  He needs to socialize and explore.  A dog with a happy mind is a dog that is happy in the home.

Lastly, you may want to consider using some more natural items that are freely available to dogs just as they were in the wild, such as Milk Thistle, Mistletoe, and Purple Coneflower.  These plants help boost your pet's immune system, keep their energy level stable, and increase their vitality.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
does anyone know how to get rid of fleas on cats naturally?
she's a long-haired cat and lice combs rip her fur out.

and i want to know if there is any other way of killing fleas without using flea collars, tablets, drops etc.

    • ANSWER:
There is something that really works fantastic ,it is about that i tried a less known method with leaf of wormwood and i' m done it with fleas . I mean it that i cleaned it on my cat forever .

  2. QUESTION:
How to naturally rid feral cats of fleas?
    HELP!
I have 2 feral female cats that have taken up residence in my yard almost 2 yrs now and they are infested with fleas which in turn infest my yard. I can not go outdoor without spraying "off" on myself. I know that the feral cats would be more healthier and deserve that if I could find a natural flea remedy that can be placed in the food as they will not allow me to get near them close enough to touch let alone treat. PLEASE HELP!!
    Thank You

    • ANSWER:
I used the beneficial nematodes in my garden when I moved in 14 years ago and have never had to worry about fleas on my cats since. I do have cat fence-in so my cats stay on my property and don't have a dog to walk who might bring fleas home.

The nemetodes are something you use in the fall and then the fleas are gone for the next year. So it's not an instantaneous response.

There is a flea medication (Program, I think) that you can put in food and cats are notorious for avoiding food with any human "additive".

  3. QUESTION:
How can I get rid of fleas on my CAT naturally?
My cat is an indoor cat but was outside for a time before we moved and now were in a new house and she has fleas!! and we don't want to use anything if its not natural or almost natural.
well my fiancee and I haven't gotten bitten by any fleas... and haven't seen any around the house I don't think she is infested I think she has a few of them...well she is long hair so maybe I don't know.

    • ANSWER:
As a fully natural cat mom, including feeding my cats a complete raw diet, I ever had any success with "natural" flea treatments. My trying them has only led to a worse infestation than I started with so in my opinion, flea preventatives are worth the small risk they present.

My cats are permitted to go outside into a 2,000 sq ft. cat safe enclosure so they are most likely exposed to fleas. Twice a year, Spring and Fall, we Frontline Plus them as a preventative measure and I have never had a flea in my home.

I get mine from my vet but you can buy Capstar and Frontline Plus here which will definitely kill all the fleas on your cat and prevent reinfestation.

      http://www.drsfostersmith.com/

Use the Capstar right away. It will kill all fleas on your cat with in an hour. Then after an hour add on the frontline Plus and it will keep fleas off your cat for 30 days. No vet visit required and totally safe.

Frontline contains fipronil, which spreads via the body oils killing fleas within 24 hours and ticks within 48 hours. Ticks are generally killed before they bite, decreasing the risk of tick-borne disease transmission. Approved for use on kittens 8 weeks and older.
Frontline Plus also contains (S)-methoprene, an Insect Growth Regulator, which prevents an insect from maturing or reproducing. Approved for use on kittens 8 weeks and older.
You can use FRONTLINE flea and tick control once a month and it's completely waterproof. Provide your cat with the best flea and tick protection, right from the start.

  4. QUESTION:
How do i get rid of fleas on cats and kittens?
I have had this problem for OVER 6 months. We have tried washing the cats in dish (dawn) detergent, Hartz drops on necks plus various others, Flea spray, Flea shampoo/dip and garlic in food, and carpet cleaner that kills fleas! We also have BRAND NEW KITTENS that were born on the 30th of july and know they're getting them, too!! Is there something we can put in the cats food to get rid of them naturally so when the mommy cat nurses, the kittens won't get sick? I am fed up with these fleas! And very afraid they'll kill my families cats; also they arn't outside cats and they're no fleas we are bringing in!

Use the Capstar right away. It will kill all fleas on your cat with in an hour. It is imperative that you do not skip this. Frontline Plus is only effective if the flea bites the cat. Fleas have a 3 week lifespan and only feed for a few days of that three weeks, so you must use Capstar to kill all live fleas on your cat. After you capstar add on the Frontline Plus with in 12 hours and it will keep fleas off your cat for 30 days. No vet visit required and totally safe. Any eggs that hatch will be killed when they feed by the Frontline.

How to Keep Your Cat From Killing Houseplants

Author: Lara Lee

One problem with keeping cats is that they may spoil some of your favorite house plants. Moreover, many houseplants are poisonous to cats and you must be vigilant about it before it is too late. It is advisable that you take precautionary measures about it before you end up running to the vet for its urgent treatment which may cost you heavily. You should tackle this situation before hand and manage these plants. You also need to identify as to which plants are poisonous to cats and which are not so that you do not have to worry unnecessarily in case if you possess nonpoisonous houseplants.

You need to follow certain steps in order to stop your cat from consuming poisonous house plants. First of all, you should place the plants in an area which is not accessible to your cat. However, it is but a difficult thing to do since cats can a climb almost anything and reach everywhere they feel like. They are known as great climbers and jumpers of all domestic animals. Yet, you can place your house pants in hanging baskets or areas which are not easy to reach like high selves, cupboards and bookshelves.

You can also provide your cat with some safer alternatives like grass or small safe plants with which they can play or chew on. You can also put some spray on those plants that you do not want your cat to consume. You can put bad odors on them like bitter apple or Tabasco sauce, but this can prove to be a little risky since your cat may get it in its fur and end up putting it in its eye.

Another way to avoid your cat eating these plants is to get its attention towards many toys so that it remains busy playing with them. Cats are curious by nature and always looking for new things. For this reason, frequent change in toys can keep it busy.

These tips will surely help you to keep your cat away from the injurious plants.

  3. QUESTION:
    Killing fleas on cats!?
Yesterday i gave more cats capstar ,1 each. Which has killed all flee's on them.
Today 24 hours later I have given them revolution ( buzzed a patch of fur off too make treating my long haired cat easier, his fur has been a problem in the past)

I got bitten by 2 fleas in my bedroom today, so i poisoned the carpet again with a flea killing powder.

Basically i need too know, in how many days should i check the cats again should the spot on fail?
Both are indoor cat's.The neighborhood has a ground flea problem (especially in summer) and we sometimes accidentally bring them upstairs and into the house
My cat's have heavy immunities too frontline. I was using it and then it mysteriously stopped working.Revolution claims it will kill the eggs.

    • ANSWER:
So far, you're doing the right thing using capstar and then a spot on. The fleas that bit you were newly hatched fleas desperate for a feed (humans are a last resort for fleas). Unfortunately flea eggs are impossible to kill unless put in direct sunlight, but keep persisting with the carpet stuff.

You should still be checking your cats every day, even when using a spot on, revolution wont stop them jumping onto your cats.

  4. QUESTION:
Whats the best way to kill fleas on cats and in your home?
i have had quite a proublem getting fleas off my 3 cats and out of my home. heres what i have tried so far.

on the pets - bathe cats once a week. tried several flea shampoos & dawn. sargents gold seemed to work the best, but one cat is still itching and fleas are still present. constint useage of flea comb. before last bath there were tons of fleas. now not so many. tried hertz liquid flea medications/stuff like frontline, made them itch more.

on the carpets - borax/salt left it on for 6 hours and did this two times in a week and still the fleas would be present. stuff made me feel sick so vacumed it off sooner than suggested. steam vac made it much worse. vacumming constantly. light and soapy water dish to catch fleas, not many in the water. finaly used zodiac flea carpet spray. not sure yet. the cats are kept in a cleaned room so not to spread more.

is there anything else to try to get rid of them thats not toxic? have though of everything and im on a tight budget.
thanks for the suggestion, i will try tide on the carpeting..im buying a better vacuum cleaner and i just got some adventage for the cats.. does that stuff kill the fleas on the carpet as well and on the cat?..any other tips for sprays that are nontoxic me and my pets to use on floors?.. has any one that used borax not have any effect on the fleas?..

    • ANSWER:
For my cats, I get advantage once a month for fleas. There are a few different types. It costs around a month but they will all die in a few days!! If you have multiple pets just get a bigger size and ask the vet the right measurement of each animal, then apply with a dropper.

You will need to do one last washing cycle of their bedding etc but as long as you apply it each month they will stay away. Also, they aren't supposed to get too wet while you use it but this is more of an issue if you have dogs! If you do, you just bath them 2 days before you apply it and hope they don't get dirty over the month!

  5. QUESTION:
Does dawn dish soap really work to kill fleas on cats?
My cats have had fleas for about a week and my parents cant afford Frontline or Advantage. Before i try this dish soap trick i want to know if it really works?

    • ANSWER:

otherwise you'll just have alot of clean fleas ;-)
